I know all about the Big 5, but most who have heard about it couldn't tell you which 5 schools are in it.

I know you picked 2007 because of when Temple joined, but that's the worst possible time period for NIU since 2007 was the 1 bad year NIU had in the past decade.

No, not really in 2006 you played *6* MAC teams.. Even from 2007 on there is a huge difference in the conference strength of NIU's schedule

Toledo resurgence? In that time frame (since 2006) UT is 3-3 against NIU and 2-4 against WMU.
By the way, NIU is only 3-3 against WMU during that same time period.

Looking at those stats, I must say that NIU has only been mediocre during the Temple in the MAC era.

By the way, Temple is 0-7 against WMU

If you start in 2007, by far our worst year in over a decade, then yes, our record is so-so. Starting from 2008, IIRC we've been 14-6 against the West and 12-2 against the East, with 2 division titles and 1 MACC.

I've never heard of it but my guess is Temple, Drexel, Villanova, University of Philadelphia, and Pennsylvania State University at Philadelphia.

However, I have heard of Ohio State - Michigan, Army - Navy, Auburn - Alababama, Pittsburgh - WVU, Oklahoma - Texas, Browns - Steelers, Kansas City Chiefs - Denver Broncos, Harvard - Yale, Lakers - Celtics, Notre Dame - Michigan, Notre Dame - USC, Arizona - Arizona State, Iowa - Iowa State, North Carolina - Duke. But nah, I've never heard of the Big 5.

I am not a big time college BB fan - but I have known of the 'Big 5' (and its Penn, Villanova, Temple, LaSalle and St. Joe's) for about 20 years - about the same amount of time I have been aware of the 'Crosstown Shootout' between Cincinnati and Xavier.

It does not get a lot of play outside of Philly and I would guess most casual fans have never heard of it - unless they once lived in the Philly area.

My guess is the Big 5 is as well-known in Boston as the Beanpot is in Philadelphia.

Go BU. Btw, we have a lot of BU alums either from Philly or who live in Philly. My graduating class had 9 go to BU. A bunch to UMass too.

absolutely nobody in philadelphia would include drexel in before la salle.
it is temple, nova, penn, la salle and st joes. if drexel is ever included they call it the city 6.
i think that if temple does leave the a-10 drexel should make a push to get in; it would continue their campaign to change the big 5 to the city 6

Always has and will be LaSalle. They have a rich history and in the 70's/80's there has been great teams and players to come out of there. Drexel has never been thought of as a Big 5 except when someone notes the fictitous Big 6.

Prior to Rollie (@ Nova) and Chaney (@ Temple) all the games were played @ Penn's Palestra. The Palestra has more history to it than any college basketball venue. As a kid they used to have tripleheaders consistently w/bigtime players craving to play there. I wish they still played at the Palestra. There have been books and historical movies about the rivalry of the Big 5. St. Joes and Villanova being the most heated (The Holy War). But all the games were wars more than today when they are at the teams home venues.

The notoriety of the Big 5 has changed since it left the Palestra. In those days it was nationally recognized and known.
