Very interesting.
It looks like that move would stabilize the BE for a number of years.
Hard to say how critical Temple was to the Alliance plans, but it may signal the loss of two SBC teams instead of one.

Wouldnt surprise me, Temple was in the Big East for a while before getting the boot. Word was that 'Nova was blocking them but perhaps a deal was struck.

Will be interesting to see how this impacts the "alliance" and who they are going after. I know Temple was one they were really tyring to get.

You know, all this conference realignment stuff was interesting at first but now its becoming kind of wearisome. I wish it would all get straightened out and Fall would arrive so we can watch some football. I guess it gives us something to talk about until then.

RE: Temple tp the Big East in all sporrts ?
Actually this is a huge blow to the alliance because Temple was a team they absolutely needed to get a decent TV deal and filter out the cost of travel.

Now it's a loss if they add any more teams because if you add FIU that means over 800 more miles for ECU and FIU has about 700-800 mile trips and more for every one of the games they play now.

Th alliance is probably not financially feasible for FIU right now if you go through the numbers. If they add FAU and FIU then it means market overload and another mouth to feed so it defeats the purpose of adding either one of them.

I expect them to either stay at 16 teams or get San Jose St and UNT. Without Temple any expansion on the East side just makes no sense because the TV revenue won't cover the travel cost.

Article in the NY Times:

Temple in Talks to Join Big East in All Sports
By PETE THAMEL

Published: February 22, 2012

The Big East is in discussions to add Temple for all sports as early as the next school year, according to someone briefed on the talks. Temple belongs to the Mid-American Conference and the Atlantic 10 in various sports and there are legal issues that have to be dealt with before the Owls would be able to leave. A resolution is expected this month.

Within the next month, Temple will also have to inform the new conference formed by the merger of the Mountain West and Conference USA of its intentions. Temple has been asked to join that league.

I agree Temple was a big wish list team for the Alliance, I'm sure they are looking at other options.

Both FAU/FIU though are pretty cheap to get too with the airfare and travel partner abilities. Both are in seperate TV markets. Of course neither delivers it, its still UM and to a lesser degree FSU/UF territory. Sucks from a "fan" point of few as we are not driveable, but for an athletic department its probably harder and more expensive to get to Troy then it is to FAU.

All I can do is support my Owls wherever they call home.

RE: Temple tp the Big East in all sporrts ?
This is what FIU's schedule would be like in the alliance and if they are the only Florida school it's going to be a every other week thing in every sport.

UAB 767 miles
USM 900+ miles
TUlane 862 miles
ECU 847 miles (which is a big lie because you have to fly to Pittsburgh then bus to Greenville)
Marshall 1022 miles
UTEP@ 1931 miles
Rice@ 1334 miles
Wyoming 2333+ miles and a bus trip.

Hardly any of those teams will go to FIU and hardly an FIU fans will go all the way to those games.

This is both true and not true. Troy is 50 minutes from two major cities Dothan/Montgomery and both have direct flights to Florida.

It's going to be just as cheap going to say Tulane as it is to go to ULL. However, they are not looking for two Florida schools so it's one or the other. And the trips to Texas is what will kill the budget because in the Sun Belt you guys fly to Texas every other year not twice and three times a season.

Used Expedia for these figure

I picked a date of arrival Octboer 26th and departure October 27th of this year for a mythical ECU vs FAU game. Figure a 1/2 hour bus ride at $1,000. I found over 30 flights in price range from 400-500 from Greensboro to FLL. Travel time a lil over 3 hours. All on large planes. I didnt bother to check WPB or MIA, but Im sure there were another 60 flight available between those 2.

On the same date for a ECU vs Troy game. Figure 1 hour bus ride @ $2,000 (twice the distance of FAU so twice the cost)I found about 20 flights from 375-600. Lowest travel time was 4:45 minutes and were on puddle jumpers with only about 20 rows each.

Now for olympic sports its even more cost effective because you work in a FAU and FIU game on for the same flight, plus one extra bus trip.

I know BoP is a reporter and I would love to hear from him about which one is easier and more cost effective to travel too. This is not a dis on Troy, please dont read it that way. It is just easier to fly into a large Metro area which both FAU and FIU are in.

I think FIU being so far away is a big reason why they might be in as a football only to replace the spot in the east that was being held for temple. I think the top 4 teams for the alliance are (in no real order) North Texas, FIU, LA Tech, and Utah St.

Utah St is hurt by not having baseball, but mainly by UTEP most likely fitting in the west. If they go to 20, all 4 teams get in and there are room for both in the west. If they go to 18 and UTEp moves over, the 2 spots will now be out of UNT, FIU, and Tech.

Tech is hurt by market.
FIU is hurt by distance.
UNT is good for both, who knows how important baseball really is.

My bet is FIU gets in for football only and the 18th spot is either Tech or UNT. It would make it much easier if they would go to 20, but we can never tell for sure what anyone is thinking. As much as UTSA, ODU, Georgia St, and Charlotte come up, I would be extremely surprised if they take an FCS team. I believe FAU and MTSU are well ahead in the pecking order and would be in if they go to 24.

Where would FIU park its non-Football sports? Sun Belt wouldnt let em stay nor would any other FBS confrence. If FIU goes im sure it will be for all sports or not at all.

I think Tech or FIU would probably jump at football only if that was the only way. I f the Sunbelt wouldnt take the other sports, they would have to work out something else.

Im not saying the Merger is 100% going to take a football only, but if they want to balance out Hawaii in the west and go to a 16 all sports, 18 football model....

Oh no one is getting their feelings hurt lmao I'm not a UAB fan. I'm curious as to the actual trip to Montgomery actually cost that much though? I would assume team sports are given special rates by planes and buses and are schedules months in advance. That site is usually good but that one is WAYYY off.

And they aren't looking at FIU and FAU because that bumps the east division up to ten teams and 18 which would force them to send UTEP away and then add UNT and someone else like San Jose. And your looking at two ten team divisions with a nine game conference schedule to even make it work at twenty.

Because that Troy fan doesn't like ECU.

That's a big stretch now. This was just a little misinformation because I'm under the assumption that you have to fly to the Pitt/Greenville Airport and then drive to ECU I don't know all the logistics because I have never been.

And I like ECU, I'm not very fond of the way a lot of ECU posters have acted through all this expansion talk you included. But ECU is a model for all Non AQ schools.

I think your a little bit confused. East Carolina is in the city of Greenville, NC. The city of Greenville is in Pitt County. The name of the airport in Greenville is Pitt-Greenville Airport. It is only 2-3 miles from campus.
