Conferece Races going down the stretch
Not exactly realignment related, but I figure we could use a little sports talk in between 04-cheers I haven't been paying a ton of attention to the basketball season, but we are nearing its end and I wanted to see how all the big conference races were stacking up. Feel free to add anything as this is just a quick scan through.

Atlantic 10: Temple (10-2) and St. Louis (10-3) in a 2 man race for the conference crown. Temple won the game between them and there isn't another one.

ACC: North Carolina (11-2), Duke (10-2), and Florida State (10-2) all tied in the loss column have decent shots at the ACC crown. Duke still has a game left against both Florida State and North Carolina and thus is guaranteed an outright championship if they win out. Florida State and North Carolina both would need the other to lose for an outright championship.

Big 12: Kansas (12-2) is a half game ahead of Missouri (12-3). The final basketball Border War will be at Kansas Saturday and will likely either leave Kansas set up for an outright title or leave both with an excellent chance for a shared title.

Big East: Syracuse (14-1) has a 2 game lead over its closest competition with only 3 games left. Marquette and Notre Dame need to win out and hope Syracuse loses 2 vs. South Florida, @ UConn, and Louisville to get a share of the title. It should be noted that all three of those last 3 opponents are pretty good with South Florida actually at 10-4 in conference (a surprise to me who hadn't been paying attention to the Big East race).

Big Ten: A three team race in the Big Ten. Michigan State is in the drivers seat at 11-3. Ohio State (11-4) still controls its destiny for a share of the title at least as it ends the season at Michigan State. The Buckeyes did lose their first game against the Spartans in Columbus though. Michigan (11-4) need Michigan State to drop one and to win out to hope for a share of the title. Michigan State's toughest game left is probably actually at Indiana (Big Ten road games have been exceedingly hard to win this year).

Conference USA: Southern Miss and Memphis tied on top here with Tulsa and Central Florida a game back in the loss column. Southern Miss doesn't play any of those teams so it looks like they have the easiest path to the conference championship. Memphis does play Tulsa and Central Florida still.

Mountain West: New Mexico has a 2 game lead. Neither UNLV nor San Diego St. get another game against them so they'll have to win out and hope New Mexico drops at least 2 of its last 4.

PAC-12: Cal and Washington are tied at 12-3. Colorado is only one game back as far as losses go at 10-4. Colorado does play Cal so all they need is for Washington to lose one for them to be back in control of their fate.

SEC: Kentucky is undefeated in conference and has a three game lead over Florida. They will be outright champs.

Notre Dame and Marquette have their work cut out for them...

The Irish play WVU tonight in South Bend, and then travel to St. John's (Sat) and Georgetown (Mon), before finishing @home against Providence (3/2)...

Marquette plays Rutgers tonight at home, before traveling to Morgantown (Fri) and Cincinnati (2/29), and finishing @home against Georgetown (3/4)...

There shouldn't be much Selection Sunday outrage this year. It looks like a bunch of mediocre teams will be added to the field to reach 68.

what's amazing to think about is it's very possible we lose 2 auto bids in 2 years(CUSA/MWC merging- not sure if they'll get auto bid)- and that would give us 39 at large spots available.

RE: Conferece Races going down the stretch
Looking forward in the Big Ten, the remaining schedules are:

Ohio State: vs. Wisconsin, @ Northwestern, @ Michigan State. This is probably the toughest of the 3 competing still. Ohio State did beat Wisconsin on the road and should beat them at home, but the Buckeyes have been more unpredictable of late. Northwestern is a team much improved and really wanting in their first NCAA tournament ever (yes you read that right) and will not be a cakewalk even if OSU does win. @Michigan State should technically be the toughest game of the year.

Michigan State: They play at Minnesota tonight. Road Big Ten games have been tough, but I don't think the Spartans will let it be close enough to make it much of a game anyway. After that they have vs. Nebraska, @Indiana, and home against Ohio State. Beating Nebraska at home should be easy. Winning at Indiana will be more of a challenge, but I still think they pull it off. Ohio State they should beat at home unfortunately.

Michigan: Beat Northwestern in overtime last night to stay alive for a conference title. While probably the weakest of the three, their remaining schedules is the easiest. They play at home to Purude, @ Illinois, and @ Penn State. Purdue has been hurt by players being kicked off (it's rough being a Purdue fan this time of year the last several years thanks to injuries and things like this) and its at home so I think Michigan wins that. Illinois is in complete collapse mode. Maybe they pull one more out for their coach, but I think Michigan takes them on the road. Penn State is improved from earlier in the year and I could see upsetting Michigan, but it would definitely be an upset.

All in all, I think Michigan State is almost certain to win at least a share of the title. Michigan is probably more likely to win a share than Ohio State even though the Buckeyes are actually the team that controls their own destiny. I can't predict against my state though so will say Ohio State wins out, Michigan State wins the other games beside against the Buckeyes and Michigan drops one at Penn State leading to Michigan State and Ohio State as co-champs.

I predict Michigan wins out, MSU loses @IU, and Ohio loses @MSU. Michigan and MSU will share the Big Ten title.

Except Southern Miss just lost at UTEP tonight, and Memphis won, so Memphis is now up a game, with 3 tough ones to go: @Marshall Saturday, and home to UCF and @Tulsa next week.

Notre Dame absolutely manhandled WVU tonight allowing only 16 second half points... 'Cuse squeaked out a win over the Bulls, USF has games left at home I believe in attempt to make a statement to increase their bubble odds!

Minnesota was leading Michigan State for most of the game, but completely collapsed at the end. Michigan State retains its game lead in the standings.

RE: Conferece Races going down the stretch
Couple of updates (may do a full list tomorrow).

1. Kansas beats Missouri in overtime, all but clinching an outright Big 12 championship.

2. Michigan is about to lose at home to Purdue, ending their hopes for a Big Ten title.
