Death of Two Akron Football Players
I din't realize what had happened to QB Chris Jacquemain and DB Tyler Campbell; very sad ending for these two young men. Excellent article, very long & very sad. On the front page of today's Plain Dealer.

Football could not save Chris Jacquemain and Tyler Campbell from painkiller addiction

I had no idea either. What a tragic story. I just finished covering something similar to this when Oklahoma linebacker Austin Box died from a prescription drug overdose this past May. He was a hometown hero here in Enid and his death has devastated his parents and it shook the community. These are the worst stories to have to cover.

Very unfortunate and just shows again how brutal these types of drugs are and how hard they are to escape.

yes and we give them to teenagers on a routine basis for moderate injuries for the sake of profit. my daughter saw these spread through her friends at school freshman yr hs and it ended up in a huge mess even for the girls who weren't using. these stories are important to tell and show how these become health issues w criminal side effects. however, we as a society tend to treat them as criminal issues w health side effects. there are safer ways to treat pain, but less money to be made on them.

Tragic.

This type of drug use has to be a concern in every school. What do other schools do to support students in trouble, especially student athletes that may take them at the team doctor’s direction?

I have sort of a hard question to ask: while both were adults and made their own decisions, should the MAC support medicating Athletes so that they can re-take the field, or the pitch, or the pool or the track? Is 60 Percoset the proper dossage?

Anyway, I know the answer. Just thinking out loud at such a waste of life.

The Percoset wasn't the problem. That's a standard prescription for someone coming out of a minor surgery and the chance of getting addicted to it is very low if taken properly.

The real problem began when these two men discovered Oxycontin, on their own or with the help of some "friends" they met at a party. It's a much more powerful version the main ingredient found in Percoset and is far more addictive.

They probably had no idea that by moving on to Oxycontin they were setting themselves up for a powerful addiction. Probably thought of it as the same as taking an "extra strength" version of what they already had. But the seeds of addiction were already planted with the small amount of opioids in the Percoset (which would simply went away if they stuck to only what they were prescribed), and from there the rest of the sad story happened.

At Akron, there were rumors regarding Jacquemain, but they did a good job of hiding the full truth of what was going on until he was removed from the team. Tyler Campbell was a bigger shock. So many things had to come together the way they did for this tragedy to happen. What if the two stayed away from each other? What if Ianello didn't take away Campbell's scholarship (it's not like we didn't have plenty of open ones)?

It's just a sad story that every MAC athlete should read and learn from. It took a tragedy for Akron to implement a far more stringent drug policy than the NCAA requires. I hope other schools learn from this and do the same.

How much of it is the culture of machismo that you're supposed to go out there and play through pain, in some cases, taking whatever pill you can to make that tolerable? Instead of putting backups in there while you heal. They do have backups on teams, right?

Is 60 a normal dossage? How many do they take a day, or for how long does the perscription last? I don't doubt what you say, just help me understand. I've never had the ill-luxury of a painkiller perscription, so some of this just seems way out of left field....

It's usually an initial bottle of 30 and a refill good for another one. Percoset contains Acetaminophen and a small amount of the opioid oxycodone. The Acetaminophen is what sets the recommended dosage, as its cumulative effects on the liver are not good. You should take one or two every six hours, as needed. It's not a long-term solution to pain, just something to dull the more acute pain associated with surgery. 60 pills will last you about a month if used responsibly. Doctors like it because it's not as addictive as Vicodin and has less side effects.

What I'm trying to say is that it's a standard thing after having surgery, like these two players had. The trouble began when they went outside what their doctors had prescribed.

That might be the saddest story about young ballplayers that I've ever read. Wow.
