Neither better health care for the poor nor better health care for women pisses me off. I'm in favor of better health care for everyone.

What pisses me off most of all is a bunch of liars passing legislation that they claim will mean better health for the poor and better health for women, and getting the votes of the poor and of women in return, when the reality is that it will mean paying more for worse health care--for everyone.

That does piss me off.

How does this not give better health care for the poor? A poor person with no insurance couldn't get health care unless he had to go to the ER and even then could be dumped out on the streets once stabilized, and hammered with costs and collections actions. Maybe he could have gone to a free clinic general practitioner once a year, but then when that guy says "I don't know sh!t about orthopedics, go see this guy" and that guy only sees people who have insurance, he's screwed.

The primary purpose of the Act is to take care of the free rider problem. These people who are left uncovered by insurance end up going to the emergency room only, when costs are obscene, they never pay them, and then we all end up paying for them anyway. So, it's certainly possible that it would be cheaper in the long run to have them all on insurance. Why should I be forced to pay for someone else's ER treatment if they can afford insurance but chose not to to save money, and then expect the rest of us to foot the bill when they need it? Everyone does have to get healthcare, and it doesn't just harm themselves if they don't get regular care. Aside from the rest of us shouldering the high costs, there's also a herding issue, whereby the sick people who go without invariably make the rest of us more sick. If the costs for the rest of us goes up because people with pre existing conditions are now covered (providing them better health care), so be it.

The issue here isn't the cost being passed to paying people in the form of higher premiums, though that is bad. The greater issue is the government telling a company they must provide a product for free. This is a massive power grab by Obama that is being largely ignored.

The Affordable Care Act was passed pursuant to Congress' Constitutional power to regulate interstate commerce, and Obama is executing the law faithfully as is his Constitutional responsibility. In other words, he does have the right to do it.

And insurance companies don't have to offer contraception, and employers don't have to sign on with one who does. You can still sign up for a plan that doesn't offer it and pay the fine. To avoid the fine though they have to provide a plan that covers medically necessary treatment for men AND women.

I'm just pissed this didn't all happen in the 1930's. Then I wouldn't have had to read all the outraged Facebook status updates.
