Sorry, I just think that celebrating recruiting is nuts. I'll celebrate when we win some games.

Not to beat a dead horse, but in this case, it is not a celebration of recruiting for the sake of recruiting. It's good news because going into the 2012, we potentially would have had a wrecked defensive line due to injury. Good luck winning anything when you are missing two of your critical interior defensive lineman. The signing of this kid (JUCO transfer who will play immediately) means the our depth has been steadied and now we have a better chance of getting those 8-10 wins.
If I were a "drink more beer" kind of guy, I would be buying everyone a St. Arnolds due to this news. But my idea of a strong drink is Ginger Ale, so the only question is Schwepps or Cananda Dry? 04-cheers

i guess if one must wait until they produce on the field, there is no point in following recruiting.

Ok, so far this week I've read we shouldn't talk about the baseball lineup next year, and not to talk about recruiting on the recruiting thread.... Maybe we should shut down the interwires.

RE: 2013 Football Recruiting
There is not a perfect correlation between recruiting success and on the field success, but there is a very high one. There is a reason that Alabama; LSU; USC; and the like keep winning; they recruit very well. I understand that Boise State wins and does not have highly recruited classes, but they are an outlier.

So, following Rice football recruiting and celebrating recruiting success (hey, in recruiting everybody wins!) is a logical extension to being a college football fan; just enjoy the success. You will have plenty of time to be grumpy in October and November.

RE: 2013 Football Recruiting
Nobody is saying don't follow it. Good lord, growing up between Tuscaloosa and Auburn, I've been exposed to intense recruiting battles my whole life. There certainly is a correlation between recruiting success and on-the-field success. Alabama's defense wouldn't look like an NFL defense if they didn't have probably 20 people on their two-deep who will play in the NFL someday.

But we have people on here who go all ecstatic because we sign some 18-year-old kid to a scholarship, like it's the Second Coming or something. Let him get on the field and make some plays before we go overboard.

Over the last few years, we've gotten way excited about a bunch of different people, none of whom ultimately helped us win many football games. That's all I'm saying, let's keep some perspective. I'll get very excited when these folks get us to a CUSA championship game and a bowl victory. We're not even sniffing that right now.

2 wins; then 4 wins; then 4 wins. I think the next in the progression is 6 wins. Last year was not as good as I would have wanted, but we finally beat a BCS conference school. There is progress; it is happening. If we keep bringing in upgraded talent, we will win more games (this is what keeps me going; don't burst my bubble).

Well, the league will get weaker starting next year ... there is that.

We'd better win that weaker league. Often. Football and basketball, men and women, often, in addition to baseball. Period. No excuses. None.

Latest commit is CB Anthony Canady from Mesquite. 5-9 170lbs, 4.5. 3-star rated by Rivals.

Quote:Mesquite (Texas) corner Anthony Canady. The 5-foot-8, 170-pounder won defensive back MVP awards at the DFW Nike Football Training Camp, The Next Level Athlete Showcase and the National Underclassman Combine.

Downside is that the 5-9 170 is probably generous, but his film and (obviously) camp performances are impressive.

Here's cut-ups from some of the spring camps he dominated:

You can tell he's a heady player. Great read-react skills.

Canady looks good. A bit under-sized, but very quick. And it's obvious how fast he reacts..especially to the ball in the air.

Very nice, let's hope we can hold him over some of those other schools listed in his profiles.

We just landed Trey Martin's buddy, 3-Star tight end Cole Hunt from El Campo. He is also is rated the 27th best TE recruit in the nation.

In the nation and only rated 3 star? You mean in Texas?

Well he is committed to Rice, so he's clearly not that good. Goodbye stars.

Meanwhile the little sister of Colt McCoy has announced she's going to Texas and was just rated at 4 stars.

RE: 2013 Football Recruiting
canady is very good on all short routes but he gets beat a lot on deep routes and is bailed out by bad throws. he IS very fluid and if he can learn to be more patient he could do very well in man situations. right now is down fall is is biggest strength....when he sees something he reacts extremely quick, this is why he gets beat on double moves so easily. he will have to learn how to make plays without reacting as quick as he does on the first move...has TONS of potential...his size doesn't bother me because he really gets up off the ground and he times the ball really well....

Very valuable input, thanks nightowl! I may be making wrong assumptions, but I assume getting beat by double-moves is something that can be corrected through coaching, repetition, and experience? At least more-so than say a player who doesn't have quick reactions can be corrected? In most situations, I'd rather gamble on the guy with quickness, speed, and jumping ability. Worst-case scenario is you probably have a guy that can shut-down short- and mid-range routes while generally needing some safety help over the top.
