That plays into the hands of the "AQ" schools as well.

Based on quotes from conference presidents it looks as though AQ will be eliminated come 2013. Which makes it kind of dumb for Boise, SDSU, UCF, Houston, SMU & Memphis to join the BE if there is no more AQ.

Ummm Big East hoops for UCF, Houston, Memphis, and SMU

so ... no not really dumb..

Could make an argument for SDSU and Boise but they are football only, whats the big deal there?

Why fly from San Diego or Boise to the East coast if there is no AQ advantage.

It doesn't become so dumb if they have a shot at the national titile and schools from C-USA/MWC, MAC, WAC, SBC don't. Especially if we are soon regulated to be considered DI-AA, with the big conferences considered DI-A and the current FCS regulated DI-AAA.

Sand Diego / Navy will be a huge rival game...

but why fly four times a year in the BigEast? Because Playing Rutgers and UConn is better than University of New Mexico or Wyoming (which incidentally are games you fly to anyway)..

Look. The main problem for conference-DOA, the MWC, and WAC is that you have a big money footprint *for all sports* when the only sports than can pay for that footprint are football and basketball.

If you're in the Big Ten you can get away with that because you make so much money on football that flying your field hockey team from Minneapolis to Philadelphia (or wherever you land to get to Penn State) is not an issue.

When you're a mid major though it does not pan out.

I think the only conference schools that Buffalo has to fly to, for anything, are NIU and Ball State. Everything else is within an eight hour drive! Now UB is on the east end of the conference. For schools like Bowling Green and Toledo the non football travel is painfully easy. which makes the Toledo fan on the CUSA boards chatting up like he wants in very amusing.

Temple might be stupid enough to go it alone into that mess and give up what they have in the A10/MAC more power to them. Right now they are in a similar situation to Boise/SDSU.

Their non revenue sports have the smallest footprint they can manage and their football has to fly. Four road conference games, that's four flights a year for the one team you have that will make money.

Now if the DOA manages to snag several other nearby teams (UMass, JMU, ...) maybe then its worth it.

All of the estimates are 5 to 7 mil for fb only schools and 7 to 10 for all sports. There is now where else the new BE schools could have gone for 1/3 of that.

As in its going to cost an extra, a total, or is that a revenue?

I'm not sure too many jump from SBC to C-DOA. Maybe UNT, but the others probably realize that it's a sinking ship.

I mean you're probably right, but it doesn't mean it's a good plan. I understand that CUSA thinks it's better than the SBC...but it's not.

Each school should look at a conference as to how it can be leveraged for its own good and the greater good. SBC has already shown its top programs can compete w/ CUSA. It's shown that a regional, stable conference is good for all involved.

All three get good competition, and likely bowl opportunities, while the conference as a whole continues to improve.

Adding ECU provides a new state, w/ a large alumni and fan base. What they would get is a conf championship game to occupy their large stadium, and good competition w/ similar regional universities.

UAB has a fairly young football team, and can start a rivalry w/ Troy.

Marshall gets its southern conference, w/ much better geography: WKU and MTSU in particular, where it can extend its recruiting for bball and fball.

Both the SBC and CUSA maps get cosolidated, reducing travel costs while still adding new states. No more road trips to Tulsa or El Paso.

ECU isn't joining the Sun-Belt under any circumstances. It's not a regional league for us. I can understand the idea of wanting to be in a regional league, it's something ECU has wanted for years, but the Sun-Belt only has one team in a state that borders NC, and they are almost a 10 hour drive away. The MAC east is actually closer to more regional for us, although still not regional. Under an absolute worst case scenario where the MWC was somehow able to raid C-USA (which I don't think they can because they are in just as weakened a state right now with a restrictive TV deal they are dying to get out of) ECU, USM, Marshall, UAB, and Tulane would likely just add a few teams and keep the C-USA name. La Tech would join in a heart beat, and my guess is WKU, MTSU, either F_U and several others would be interested. I know you will say that's not much different that joining the Sun-Belt, but it would be getting rid of a little of the fat.

Revenue, Boise said it was expecting 6mil as a fb only, BB schools likely get another 3 to 4 mil.

That's my guess.

Honestly I don't know Owl. I don't see you all joining for all sports unless we landed a TV deal that Temple just couldn't turn down moneywise. And I don't know if The Alliance would want Temple for football only, unless it was to balance the way Hawaii is football only in the West.

I do know that our AD indicated this afternoon at a luncheon the merger is on.

Add Temple for all sports. Add Umass for all sports. Bring in one quality basketball school from the A10 or CAA to offset Hawaii's football only membership. Done. Temple & Umass can't turn that down.

Temple and UMass would be nuts to join all sports. Travel is going to be insane on the east side compared to what they are accustomed to.

One thing about the western schools, travel is going to be long anyway you cut it so you may as well be in a far flung league. In the east at least you have the option of close knit geography if you can take it.

24 teams? LOL. They're so into absolutely having to have some kind of TV deal that they'll get their $18 million per year deal for the entire conference, given that there's about 6 teams that have positive television value in the group, (which means 75% of the games have zero or negative value to whoever signs the deal) and then ask where the money is when everyone take home their half a million after the conference skims off the top.

I don't see why that would be attractive to UMass (especially) but to Temple either. Their other sports aren't choosing between the MAC or the alliance - they're in the A-10, which is far superior to the alliance in BB.

Either might be tempted to join for FB-only (although they're not going to make a lot of FB money in either conference), but they would be absolutely insane to jump for all-sports to the alliance. There aren't any teams of the calibre of Xavier, Dayton, St.Louis, Charlotte etc in the alliance's east division. If you're not playing cross-divisional games with the west division (which is my understanding), there really isn't anything there to attract the likes of the UMass or Temple BB programs.
