Shall we be a big fish in a stagnant pond? Sunbelt talk is stupid. Solomon spoke of declines in donors. Imagine how many donors would dry up if we were stuck in that league. There are two key points about travel that have already been brought up. 1, Practically nobody from UAB travels in our current league and I guarantee you next to nobody would travel in the Sunbelt. 2, The majority of conference away games in the merger would be to cities within a yet to be determined division. I expect those divisions would turn out to be essentially current CUSA and current MW. Imagine the quality of the Mount USA title game in football. Imagine how much fun the conference basketball tournament would be in Vegas. Folks, these are good teams we would be joining. I hope we get this done.

I don't think anybody legitimately concerned about the future of UAB athletics would even consider this move for a second. If anything, attempting to poach the teams with the highest ceiling in the Sun Belt would happen. I'd rather be Independent, or play in a 6 team conference, than play in the Sun Belt.

RE: A look at Mountain USA
I posted this as a comment to his article, but all you need to know about the real motivation behind the line of thinking in Solomon's article is that the logical solution to the problem of UAB athletics not making money is to move to the Sunbelt...which involves giving up the revenue from CUSA/MWC-level TV deals and NCAA credits.

So just remember next time you realize that you are spending more money than you're bringing in, the first step in the solution is to quit your $45k/yr job 25 miles away in downtown Birmingham and get a job at the Hardee's down the street.
