RE: UAB to the Sunbelt?
Everytime I see Threads on your board like this!
I dont want UAB to come to the SBC. A football program that struggled with the bottom teams in the SBC, No thanks! Might as well kill this thread because its not happening anyhow. UAB may be "OK" in Basketball but this is the South. Football is the real sport that matters.

Why do you come to our board anyway? I can't imagine having nothing better to do than to go to Troy board... so why do you come to our board. No one asked you to come here, no one asked you to comment, so go away.
I don't even go to your board when we play each other much less at 7 AM on Saturday morning when we are not even playing each other. Must be an exciting trojan day in Atlanta.

RE: UAB to the Sunbelt?
UAB's record, while sucking in CUSA, against Troy, bell cow of the Belt:
4-5, with last year's one-point Troy win in Pike County breaking the tie.
The definition of domination, no?
And Atl, I don't blame you for not wanting to bring up basketball. It's pretty ugly for your Trojans.

And yet the year before you guys only beat Troy by 1 point on a hail mary pass...We have our worst year since 1983 and still beat UAB by 1 point.
And its no secret Troy sucks at basketball. Im hoping with the new arena opening next season we start pulling better players.

I was noticing the standings in the Sun Belt while glancing at the MTSU game.
Yuck.

You beat a 3-9 team at home by one point. Congrats.
In UAB's other three wins over Troy, it was by a combined 65-36. One one-point game (because your holder butterfingered a snap on a tying PAT, IIRC), and two righteous thumpin's.
I like Troy well enough, and think it can be a fun little rivalry, but don't bring holier-than-thou smack to from Pike County to this board.
As are as your new gym is concerned, I'm happy for you, and look forward to visiting it.

Hahah!
A couple of years ago, the Troy fans looked like Baptists on Easter. "Who are all these people in our seats?"

Soooooo, you are opposed to the idea of UAB joining the Sunbelt? Excellent! It's so rare to see amicable consensus on the Internet. Do we need to formalize this agreement? I'll need some time for my people to secure some pork rinds, Moon Pies, and Natty Light so just give me a heads up.

Don't worry skippy, no one here wants us joining a bottom feeder conference either. Now run along.

RE: UAB to the Sunbelt?
My submission to Sound Off! sent yesterday:
Quote:I must write to take issue with Jon Solomon's article of February 9th regarding a UAB move to the Sunbelt. As to the financial numbers, Mr. Solomon again demonstrates a selective analysis as regards UAB athletics. In the most recent year available, expenses did indeed exceed revenue for UAB athletics. This was also true, however, of all but 22 FBS athletics programs around the country. I fail to see the benefit in comparing UAB to a "breakeven" point or even the profits made by less than two dozen other athletic's departments unless the aim is to target the school as an irresponsible maverick, which could not be farther from the truth. As to a move to the Sunbelt, that would involve UAB giving up close to $6 million per school in TV rights, their share of roughly $8 million in NCAA credits, half a season's worth of national TV appearances, and 6+ bowl tie-ins. If the problem is indeed money, how does the solution start with giving up revenue? If my family is facing a financial crisis, I don't quit my $50k+ job in Birmingham to get a job at the Hardee's on the corner because it's closer.
More critically, however, is the fact that while UAB athletics loses money, UAB does not. In the past decade UAB completed projects to create the Campus Green, the Commons, the Rec Center, the new softball/baseball complex, and training, weight, and academic centers for student athletes. None of those projects were paid for in cash and none of those projects directly create revenue. However, no one has a problem recognizing the benefits of the above to the "quality of life" at UAB, to attracting the best students and instructors, and to solidifying the school as a world-class destination for post-secondary education. Whatever money UAB spends on athletics must be aimed at the same returns and, in fact, it's quite easy to see how a CUSA-level profile in athletics benefits the entire university...unless one is operating with eyes wide shut.
