Let's see a link.

Thanks. And what does the study show? That the claim that Memphis fans dwarf all the SEC fans is pure ****. Memphis *alumni* add up to far more, but that's much different from fans. The study shows that SEC license plates in the DMA add up to about the same number as Memphis plates, and the people interviewed also note that Memphis fan interest is overwhelmingly about basketball, not football. They say that interest in SEC football is about equal to interest in Memphis basketball.

Which means of course that interest in SEC football, what we're talking about here, is far greater in the DMA than interest in Memphis football.

And anyone with half a brain new that to begin with: Concerning football, Memphis is SEC territory.

Everybody understands that new guys have to prove themselves just as you did a few years back. How much you have added is debatable but you have a spot and now we have ours.

Value (just a few quick thoughts):
1. You needed a school with all sports and we bring that. No additions needed. No panic upgrades to fit it.
2. You need a top rated basketball program to help fill the void left by the exit of Cuse, Pitt and WV. We help that cause nicely.
3. You need a FB team to get the BEast to 12 for a championship game. Here we are. Certainly a few down years in the last five but don't forget Five bowls since 2003. We also have beaten every SEC team that has played us as well as many other top BCS teams around the country.

You can pooh any or all the above but it only makes you look petty.

It will only make me look petty if my responses are wrong. But, #1 and #3 are characteristic of many schools, not just Memphis. #2 is nice, but football is where we have a need, not basketball.

The Big East's survival as a major conference hinges on football. We are desperate for football credibility with fans, media, and advertisers. Adding an extremely weak football program clearly detracts from our football credibility, and we have no margin for error there.

That seemingly leads to the inescapable conclusion that adding Memphis was a negative move for the Big East.

... still wondering where these better recruits are going to come from for you. At USF, we struggle badly in the face of recruiting by UF, FSU, Miami, Alabama, Auburn, etc. Often lose 4- and 5- star recruits from high schools in the shadows of our campus. We get the 2- and 3- star scraps left over.

Fortunately for us, there are a lot of those, since Florida is such a talent hot-bed. But Memphis is in a far less munificent location, and the competition for talent is even more intense in your area. I don't see it happening dude ...

Until Memphis joins the Big East Conference, it is considered a 'mid-major'.
What you may not have taken the time to look up, is that Memphis, and the state of Tennessee, produce a nice number of football players.
Teams from a bigger league (the SEC) are able to come in and recruit our city, using our mid-major status against us.
When Memphis joins the BCS cartel, that will no longer be the case. A better league will be more enticing to a recruit deciding on Memphis as opposed to them deciding on whether or not they want to play in CUSA.
I don't recall USF being a national power before they joined the Big East. A few fews after, that program took off pretty well.
With increased resources coming in from BE affiliation, and a new aggressive young coaching staff in place, there is no reason that Memphis cannot similarly improve in football like South Florida did.

Tennessee has good recruiting, but nothing like Florida, which is a gold-mine. And yet USF has made little headway in recruiting against in-state and out-of-state interlopers even in our own backyard.

I think you are fooling yourself if you think membership in a Big East filled with new MWC and C-USA programs will convince any high-quality recruits to sign on in the face of bids by SEC teams. "BCS cartel" won't hide the fact that if you go to Arkansas, you will play teams like Alabama, Auburn, LSU, and Tennessee, whereas if you go to Memphis you will play teams like SMU, UCF, Rutgers, and yes, USF. There simply is no comparison.

Hard to imagine a top recruit saying to themelves "if Memphis was still in CUSA, i'd go to Ole Miss or Arkansas, but now that they are in the BiG EAST i am going to Memphis!". I guess we will see, but ....

MEMPHIS is actually a more widely recognized brand than Ole Miss due to their Final Four runs. They have a cred with younger athletes that is not all that unlike UNC.

Nevertheless, other schools with lesser profiles have been emphasizing the SEC affiliation, and Memphis's lack of being able to gain access to the biggest stage in college football... The MNC.

Being able to take that out of their bag of tricks is huge! It allows for the image they created around Tiger basketball to transcend into football.

You seriously think Memphis football has even 1/5 the brand recognition of Ole Miss football? Have Big East homers gone insane?

Use your head for a moment. If a kid goes to Ole Miss, they get to play against LSU, Alabama, Arkansas, and Florida. You go to Memphis and play UCF, Rutgers, Houston, and Cincy?

Is that even a remotely close comparison?

If a kid goes to Ole Miss to play against LSU,Alabama, Arkansas, or Florida, chances are VERY good that that Ole Miss team will LOSE all four games. That is a equally negative argument for a kid choosing Ole Miss over Memphis in the future.

I don't think so. If a kid has any talent at all, he wants two things: A chance to shine on the college stage, and set himself up for the NFL. You can't shine on a small stage, and compared to Ole Miss football, Memphis football is a small stage. Win or lose, Ole Miss plays games before huge crowds on major TV networks, Memphis does not and still will not in the Big East.

Just wait until you visit USF and play before an announced crowd of 45,000 but with 28,000 actually in the stands, and neglible TV. Then you'll realize this.

Louisiana, Texas, Florida, and Alabama. We can now afford to expand our recruiting due to the added income. The new coach and his staff were out in place with that in mind. Their recruiting territory from prior jobs reflects those states. Tennessee produces few 5 star players in football. Tennessee gets them if they want them. However, we have always gotten good players from northern Mississippi away from Ole Miss, Mississippi State, and other $EC schools. Our biggest albatross has always been the $EC neighbors telling kids that we can't play for a national championship. Of course, they have as much chance at that as my 5'4" body does of dunking over Dwight Howard. That now changes and our expanded territories and BE invitation mean that we should be able to get 3 and 4 stars to upgrade our program. Don't forget that it wasn't that long ago DeAngelo Williams and crew were going to bowls and beating USF yearly. We had 40,000 plus every game in our stadium and it will not take long now to se that again. It would be silly to sell Memphis and football short. I would compare it to the Bearcats program and what happened once it joined the BE. Take this for what it is worth, but Fred Smith is a football guy and his being part of the program is good for everyone in this league. Down the road, you will not regret Memphis being in the BE/
I think you are way too optimistic about Memphis's chances to recruit effectively in those or any other SEC states, and i also think that AQ is going away, and that will be a mortal wound for Big East football as a first-tier conference. But those are empirical questions that we'll know the answer to soon enough. Until we do, good luck with that, and good luck to us as a conference. 04-cheers
Memphis will be able to recruit a little better, due to their association in The BEast. But if Alabama, Tennessee, Arkansas, or any other SEC power is going up against Memphis for the same recruits, The BEast association won't help them any more than their CUSA association did. That's a fact of life in SEC country, and it won't change any...

I don't think that I am. Here' why. Ten years ago, we had a staff that was covering part of this expanded area and we had a run of good success and bowls. Those guys ended up in the NFL or better college gigs. They were replaced with older guys with little drive, the head coach had a heart attack, and that killed the run, for the most part. The main players were from Georgia, Louisiana, Arkansas, and Alabama(plus the kicker was from central Mississippi and he is an All Pro in the NFL with the Pats). If we had the money that we now will have, we could have done more. The staff at that time was telling us that it was only lack of money for more trips that kept us having the 8-4 type years to be 10-2 ones. On a personal level, I think it is up to each member to step it up and prove everyone wrong about any sport. One can only tackle the problems of its own control. I can assure you that Memphis is going to do that with swift action and effort.

What I find especially informative here - is that the vote by the Presidents of The Big East Universities was unanimous to admit The University of Memphis. An intelligent, thoughtful and reasonable human being would conclude that the university presidents had all the various data and information needed to make such a decision. When you compare their collective insight and knowledge, which was based on exhaustive due diligence - to the ramblings of the OP.......you can only conclude that he is simply ignorant of the underlying data and his circular and repetitive arguments are based on personal bias.

I get conflicted about this sometimes. On one hand, it's a total sausagefest on BBS and it's nice to have Quo's estrogen on hand to weigh in and give us a different perspective. On the other hand, she's already been exposed as a Georgetown reject/wannabe and a USF poser who hates the conference and America, and worse yet, we all know her knowledge of sports is annoyingly terrible. So it's like, it's good to have her around, but also she's dumb and hostile, so maybe it's not good to have her around. Y'know?
