That reminds me of a funny story that Eugene McCarthy used to tell:

In the early 1950s he was a little-known freshman Senator from Minnesota and he showed up to give a speech at a college campus somewhere, I think it was in Maryland. He noticed a lot of media in attendance, including TV-cameras (this in the day when having a speech on TV was still a very big deal). He was flattered and excited to think he was becoming a national figure and he eagerly began speaking to the crowd. But after a few moments, he noticed the media packing up its equipment and heading for the exits. Afraid that he had bombed with his speech, he wrapped up as quickly as he could. He saw that one friend from the press was still around, and asked what he had done wrong. The friend said,"Oh, nothing. We thought you were the other McCarthy, that's all."
