It could be to tell another option to **** or get off the pot so to speak, or it could just be to restock the bball side. If that the case they gotta make Temple a priority. JM has said they had a plan to have up to 24 teams. That would be fun.

Well if he wanted 24 he missed the boat. We could have added SDST,UNv and Memphis for all sports and that could have created a pretty good cross country basketball league

I think the Big East is "looking hard" at a few schools. Memphis may be one of them, but I doubt they're the top choice right now.

AFA
Temple
Army
ECU
BYU
Memphis

Are all possibilities. Some more than most, but I agree with Friar, some politics could be involved here.

Of that list Memphis is the front runner.
Army,Byu and air force are not coming and while I like ECU the league is looking to strengthen basketball side when cuse and Pitt leave. Temple will have Nova blocking them always.
BYU and AF I see as continued targets to join Navy in 2015

I'm not sure if I agree with the whole Temple being blocked by Nova. I do think there is one school that no one is mentioning UMASS. Next year they start playing home games at Gillette Stadium. Big improvements in the program and good bball program. I think they have to be on the list aswell

Memphis has a history with Louisville, Cincinnati, USF, UH, UCF, SMU, Marquette, and DePaul in CUSA.

They bring a good market. They bring good basketball. They bring the Liberty Bowl.

And with updated facilities and a new coaching staff, the football should be noticeably better.

Memphis would be an excellent addition to the Big East.

We've been insincerely flirted with before...

BEast plays us like Calipari did with coaching openings every year.

what if this move is a proactive move to make sure that Louisville doesn't ditch us for the Big 12? If the ties are as strong as people say they are, and hearing what seems to be coming Pitino, is inviting Memphis a proactive effort by Marinatto to add stability to the conference? One can argue that the largest targets for the Big 12 is UofL and Cinci. Inviting Memphis helps keep both of those school in the Big East.

No way. Nobody we add will keep anyone from bailing to big12 ,ACC or any of the other current AQ conferences. This is all about the best addition fr never still in the league

Spot on.

I think its a move to save basketball if Louisville leaves. If you remember the Big East commish stated the next move would be to shore up basketball.

Even if Louisville stays, great, if not we have another recent basketball power that is ready to step up.

Memphis and Temple need to next in line. Football is fine right now. Boise State, Houston, UCF, SMU, SDSU, and Navy are pretty much the best of what was left considering that you either had to be in a big market or really good. ECU, Marshall and Southern Miss are still out there in the east while BYU, Air Force, UNLV, Nevada, New Mexico, and Colorado State are the best of the west. To be honest the alliance and the Big East could still be great conferences.

RE: Kevin McNamara reporting Memphis in talks to join BE.
Initially, I'm not too excited over this move. I have Air Force and Temple at the top of my pecking order. I would still rather have Army after that (I've given up on BYU). Now I know we won't land all three.

I just don't like what Memphis brings on the football side of things. I think it drags our conference down and makes us look bad. How can we make the case that this conference belongs with the big boys, when we're inviting C-USA bottom feeders? I just don't want them to turn into a New Mexico/San Jose State and always be dragging down the football conference. Seeing that in the WAC/MWC got old fast. I simply don't see the football value Memphis brings, but I'm hoping they can turn things around quick and make me look dumb.

Having said all that, I guess adding Memphis appeases the basketball schools. We really need their support moving forward and must keep them happy for future votes. It's good to see the basketball side of things finally getting attention, but Temple could have had the same effect in basketball while not sacrificing football.

I don't know the whole Nova situation, but there's gotta be some creative thing you could do to appease both sides. I hope that we are really working dilligently to bring Temple aboard and that we didn't quit too easy on it. Still hoping Temple gets added to bring basketball to 18 and Air Force/Army get added for 14 football schools. That's my dream scenario. I'd be cool with UNLV or Fresno in place of Army, but getting Air Force on board is imperative. Missing out on both Air Force and BYU would be a disappointment.

Could be Memphis leaking to Providence to actually get B12's attention to be the 12th......

You don't want Memphis because of their football but you say you want Army? Really? Army has had one winning season since 1996. Memphis leads the series with Army 4-1.

Forget about BYU and Air Force. Both were extended invitations. Both declined. BYU turned down the Big XII too, so they are off the table.

Actually, I've been thinking a bit more. I'm cool with the move as long as Temple is also involved. This would add two more quality basketball programs to get us to an even 18. I'm sorry, but 17 is just too crazy of a number for me :). The two schools would serve as solid replacements for Pitt and 'Cuse. I'm just afraid that Memphis may be added as an alternative to Temple, instead of a partner.

Memphis still has geography going for it and a national hub airport.

Memphis is a short flight for EVERYBODY In the Big East.

That would put another team in the west division....and the BB ain't shabby.

If the BE could get the Liberty Bowl.....they would finally be back in a "traditional" bowl since they lost the Sun and Gator bowl.

Ugh, didn't we have this discussion in another thread YESTERDAY??? Yes. Army sucks, but they bring much more to the table that helps override that. Army brings national appeal, second to none academics, second to none student athletes, tradition, huge historic rialvries... and all the $$$ from those games. You're looking at this from purely a win/loss perspective. There's much more that goes into making these decisions than that. I think the advantages Army brings override their losing. They, overall, bring more to the table than Memphis does. Memphis has basketball and a good market. While Westpoint is obviously not a big a Memphis, Army means much more on a national scale and would bring more eyeballs to the tv, in football, than Memphis would. Football is what drives the bus and Army beats out Memphis in that department. I don't know why this is so hard to figure out. Is there something that seperates Memphis from Army (or any other candidates for that matter) that I'm missing???

It would be considerably easier to travel to Memphis than a lot of schools out there. Plus, Southwest Airlines is moving into the Memphis airport some time this year so it will be even easier to travel to Memphis.
