He would have to be pressed up against the screen for that to happen!

I sure hope the rumor is true. PJ's infectious, motivating excitement would be a perfect replacement for what we lost in Tuke. No doubt PJ would be the pre-game sway coordinator! 04-rock

I am now upset that I can't make the Iowa SF game. 03-weeping

It's really not hard to call plays. Many here have said you could do it. And I agree, hell, I can do it on any given play. It's knowledge of the players, and designing offensive plays to take advantage of your player's strengths on a season to season basis, and designing a game plan to exploit opponent's weaknesses and set up plays on a game to game basis, and ability to adjust to what the defense is doing, that is what will make someone a successful offensive coordinator.

Thank you Bleeds for making me believe the source of the rumor wasn't just trying to make my day. When Schiano took the Buccaneers job it figured to cause a ripple effect of some sort. This close to signing date, Rutgers needs to move fast and while their OC (Frank Cignetti) is supposedly under consideration, most of the other candidates are head coaches who might not do anything for PJ's future which would make him consider other options ... like coming back to NIU. Fingers crossed.

generally speaking I have never believed that there is such a thing, for the most part, as bad play calling. A bad play is usually the result of either bad execution on the offenses part or great execution by the defense.

I think there's probably "less than optimal" play-calling, and little tendencies and other small factors could change the play call of a knowledgeable OC. Most of which would not be known to the fans watching.

Unless PJ bombs as OC or Doeren is here so long PJ gets a job elsewhere, it will be a shock if Fleck isn't the next HC. The writing is on the wall.

You need to finally realize that coaches DO make mistakes. They DO call bad plays. It happens all the time. There were plenty under Kill. Ask Toledo fans if Beckman made perfect calls during our game at Toledo last year. Coaches sometimes call a bad play, referees sometimes make bad calls, players sometimes don't execute. Coaches are not perfect. Even your good friend Joe. Why is this so hard to understand?

RE: Hot Rumor
Whooa. There definitely is such a thing as bad play calling, although of course its execution that matters. Nonetheless, a coach puts players in a position to succeed or fail. For example, hypothetically say you are playing a big 12 team (e.g., Iowa State), and your offensive line is blowing them off the ball, and you have a weak armed quarter back ("player H") and you have built a large lead into the third quarter, and you literally could run the ball at will and keep the ball away from Iowa State (hypothetically). If at that juncture, you choose to pass the ball AND not just pass the ball, but call that "quick wide receiver screen" in your own half of the field and player H throws it and its intercepted and run back for a touchdown, that is a bad play call. [The risk/ reward on that play in that situation with that personnel makes that an incredibly bad (some might say stupid) call. Chances of success-- minimal. Best outcome- a two yard gain. Most likely outcome-- no gain. Worst outcome- a pick six. Who would call that play? No one who has half a brain IMHO.] If you then decide to follow up with more throwing and that leads to more interceptions and YOU LOSE THE GAME! That is bad play calling- hypothetically.
So, there most definitely is such a thing as bad play calling! I've seen it.
(This was a hypothetical fictional scenario. Any resemblance to any actual play calling by any individual, living or brain dead, is purely coincidental.)

Fleck will have just turned 32 at the end of next season, same age as the guy Toledo just hired, the youngest coach in the country by a decent margin. I think if Doeren leaves right away, it could be debateable. Canada might look like the better option. If he's here through say.. 2014 and the offense looks well coached, I'd say its pretty much a lock.
