Bit, recall that Marinatto did not know that teams were jumping ship. He probably still doesn't know that WVU has been trying to get out early. Don't rush the man.

Sometimes I wonder if his 5-year plan is done in crayon.

Nope. It's done in snake's blood and vermouth. (God, what is wrong with me today? My wit's exceptionally quick today. There's got to be something wrong.)

Nah. He draws it out of his pet sea snakes. He's also immune to their venom. HE MUST BE THE SNAKE KING!

RE: West VA rumor on Louisville board!
The big 12 makes sense anywhere if it it working from a point of weakness, and it is and was. Just like the BE going to california, you deal with the hand you have. WV was the best football program available to the B12 and they filled the hole that needed filled. They could not raid any of the big 4 so they did what they could do. Same was true for BE and now CUSA/MWC you make the best possible lemonade, from the lemons available.

The "market price" for Pitt & SU leaving early is probably in the $8 to $12 million range; if the reported $24 million fee for WVU is correct. They would be in the ACC for 2013.

What does a conference do with 7 teams? Sure would seem to make scheduling the 2012 season tough for the 7 remaining.

$24 million is just one of many rumors. Advise anyone to wait for the official word.

All that is actually known is the two sides were ordered into mediation by the RI court (don't know how this affects the lawsuit in WV) and that the judge will look in on this February 9th.

If its true expect some of that cash to be used to buy off one of the new all sports member for 2012. I would say probably Houston or UCF.
I always thought that Cuse and Pitt would leave for 2013 season but they'll have to pay around 10 million. TCU never played a game in BE so not a comparable situation.

RE: West VA rumor on Louisville board!
The leaders at SU and Pitt have already gone on record and said that they will honor the 27 months. I dont believe and have never believed that those schools were going to be in the BE past the 2012 season. You will have the 5 new BE teams coming in 2013 as well as a new tv contract that will start in that year. SU and Pitt will not be needed in 2013 like they are needed in 2012 and so will be able to negotiate a fee to leave.

So, can the BE now use this $24MM to get Boise, Houston, etc. over here early?

They would probably get one of the all sports member additions to replace WV doubt they try getting Boise over also.

This would imply that Marinatto is a fish of the garden pond variety.

That's actually not a bad analogy. The BEast has been getting nibbled on by the big fish in the sea. That is the garden pond fish's life, to be food for those higher up the food chain...

The answer to the first part is no. The second part maybe, there's been enough smoke for me to think that actual discussions have been/are being had about it.

Of course it speeds up Syracuse and Pittsburgh leaving. They announced they were staying under the 27-month bylaw while WVU was still in the conference. Now that WVU ripped up the contract all bets are off. Syracuse and Pittsburgh should simply pay $5 million and leave tomorrow and if anyone says a word sue the Big 12/WVU/Big East.

It was never going to speed up Cuse and Pitt leaving to right away. Both schools have said they intend to honor the contract they signed. That being said I have speculated all along that 2012 will be their last year in the Big East. Instead of $5 million each they'll come to some agreement around $8 to $10 million each to leave a year early.

Agreed. They knew there would come a time when the Big East would want them "out of the way" and that time would be when their replacements entered the league which couldn't be 2012 but would be well before 27 months ended.

Cheers,
Neil

Once the new schools come into the conference and increase the numbers to a safe level, there's no reason to hang onto a past that no longer exists...
