Will Venables leave Stoops now that he's being demoted?
As you guys should know by now, WVU is seeking to hire Oklahoma DC Brent Venables, who will no longer be calling defensive plays now that Mike Stoops has returned to his brother's staff as co-DC. Venables wants to be a head coach someday, and used to be considered a hot prospect. But now that he's being demoted, it puts a blemish on his resume. He could remove that blemish by leaving, and taking over DC duties at another school. WVU wants him to do just that...

Also, Auburn, Tennessee, and Clemson have joined the chase for Vanables' services. Auburn dropped out of the chase early, after filling their vacant coaching position with Brian VanGorder. But Tennessee and Clemson are still in the chase against WVU...

I don't see either place as a better opportunity than he'll find at WVU. Derek Dooley and Dabo Sweeney, the Tenneessee and Clemson coaches, are both on the hot seat, which makes taking a position with either a risky proposition. Holgorsen, on the other hand, is an up and coming newcomer as a head coach, and Venables could ressurect his prospects for a head coaching position by taking WVU's DC duties...

We'll see how it all shakes out. But here are a few articles... 04-cheers

OU’s Brent Venables Offered Job At West Virginia
Quote:Mike Stoops’ return to Oklahoma is certain, but the fate of OU defensive coordinator Brent Venables and assistant coach Willie Martinez is still up in the air.

News 9 Sports Director Dean Blevins has confirmed from two sources that Venables has been offered the defensive coordinator position at West Virginia.

Retaining Brent Venables is Bob Stoops’ main recruiting priority
Quote:IT’S FORTUNATE for Bob Stoops that the recruiting dead period didn’t prohibit him from talking to college coaches.

Especially his coaches. More specifically, defensive coordinator Brent Venables.

Brent Venables’ best career move might be leaving Sooners
Quote:Well, West Virginia, that’s not very sporting. We go and invite you into our league, and now you’re raiding our football staffs.

Joe DeForest, in some ways a Stillwater institution, gone to join up with old pal Dana Holgorsen.

Brent Venables, 13 years on the Sooner staff, approached about being Holgorsen’s defensive chief. And Clemson reportedly also smelling fresh meat, on the prowl for Venables.

Would be a nice get for West Virginia, Venables is obviously familiar with Big 12 teams and would bring that knowledge to West Virginia in their first year in the Big 12.

One Oklahoma sources thinks he'll say no to WVU. But I think it would be his best option, unless he decides give up on being a head coach someday, and stays in Norman...

That was basically why Casteel left WVU. He wanted to be a head coach someday and the longer he stayed in Morgantown, the less likely that opportunity became...

Clemson can have him. There are other options out there that are just as good, without all the drama...

Venables would have been a transient in Morgantown anyway. He's looking for a head coaching gig...
