oh man, let me guess...

1)burn in effigy images of etsu administration and tennis coaches....nah too jihadish

2)organize a "dancing with the etsu football stars" event....nope...too many creaky hips and knees = liability

3)re-create the imfamous WKRP Turkey Drop at the next basketball game....yes...its genius

all kidding aside, hopefully the football supporters can channel some of their passion into a positive event or two and not regress to the negativity that continues to be a detriment to their efforts...good luck to them

No, those would be things the current ETSU promotions department would come up.

Probably close to the truth, after all the last dean of the medical school used to sponsor "turkey bowling" at Christmas.

Hopefully it is something nice beyond newspaper ads, etc... Nothing negative against ETSU, just facts and hopefully a name/face behind it that people in East Tennessee/Southwest Virginia will collectively recognize.

I just thought of something . . . .

The Bucs dropping football was the Johnson City version of a franchise relocation in major professional sports. I've often used the Dodgers leaving Brooklyn as an analogy, but let's use the Browns leaving Cleveland in this example.

After the Browns left Cleveland, radio station WWWE- now WTAM- organized an event prior to the Browns last game in Cleveland in 1995. They promoted it as "the hanging of Art Modell"- Modell the owner who moved the Browns if you didn't know- and I recall a gallows being set up, a big crowd showing up on station property, an event of charges read and then, to a very large cheering crowd, a dummy being hung in effigy.

I know. I was there.

Now, the event above was not "jihadish." It was, however, a very visible and public display of Cleveland's disatisfaction with the loss of their ballclub. And nothing out of character with, say, ESPN's recent promo where they show fans having to pay off outrageous bets when their team loses.

And it was clearly effective, as the new Browns kicked off in 1999.

I'm willing to admit that Cleveland, Ohio and Johnson City, Tennessee are two very different communities. But I'm sick of hearing how taking the powers that be for dropping football to task is something that will work against the movement to revive the sport of boost the prestige of ETSU athletics.

Going to the powers that be and saying "Please, Dr. Stanton, will you bring it back?" didn't work. Therefore, I would argue we certainly need to do something other than "Please, Dr. Nolan, will you bring it back?"

And public rallies showing disatisfaction with the direction of ETSU athletics is an idea that has worked before, as the above Cleveland example shows.

"cleveland browns = etsu buc football."

It's this kind of thinking that shows the small mindedness of ETSU administration and, so many times, fans.

"Oh, no. ETSU is too small to ever think about learning a lesson that worked in a major market.

Never mind ETSU has been able to bring NBA games to Memorial Center twice. Never mind that ETSU once was home of the Atlanta Falcons training camp. No, there's nothing we can learn from major professional sports to draw from."

RE: Football Foundation, January Meeting
im serious. you are right. this is our "cleveland browns" or colts or even dodgers. i cannot believe you have not organized this before now. took cleveland 4 years, its already been 8 here, we are behind.

next week would be perfect. the new presidents first day and a demonstration right there at the alumni bell tower. you would be totally protected on a publicy run state campus. cite freedom of speech and do what you want. build a gallows, chain yourself to the bell tower, set up tents. call it "occupy etsu" get a list of charges against the athletic administration, have them read and have figures of all those responsible brought to sentence. in effigy of course. all you need is the huge crowd and it would be just like cleveland. there are some supporters on this board that im sure would be willing to help us pull it off.

the press would be all over it, being the presidents first week. you could actually get national exposure for such a thing. and maybe some traction to toward bringing football back.

i will drive through campus next week to see it. you are serious right? surely you can back this up since your thinking is much more broadbased than most of the simpletons around jc. you are not just blowing smoke and getting me excited for nothing are you? in the immortal words of flounder "this is gonna be greeeaat".

Yes. Slap's the king of dimwitted satire.

Not to mention if not outright lying, certainly not fessing up to working in athletics.

As well as totally ignoring my comment that Johnson City and Cleveland were different communities.

Here's the thing. I'll let you know there will be a public display of support for ETSU football shortly if everything goes right. Now, no, I do not think it will necessarily be as dramatic as when Art Modell was hung in effigy in Cleveland.

In fact, Slappy, I think you'll like it.

Until then, stop bending the shaft.
