Many colleges and universities are experiencing difficulty engaging alumni, particularly young alumni.

Too much college debt after college and too much tyrannical "poltical correctness" during college.

By the time they are done, they do not feel the need, or desire, to "give back."

Lots of reasons impact this. As a conservative Alumni I sure don't feel compelled to give financial donations to WMU when I read that Leftwing rag they call the Western Herald. After posting numerous 'replies to the editor' on their far left pablum, I challenged them to add JUST ONE conservative opinion writer for balance to the cacophony of Left-thought they offer up. From the responses I got you would have thought I was asking them to hire a far-right kook journalist instead of someone who represented 50+ % of the voters in Michigan.

They finally agreed to let someone from the WMU College Republicans offer counterpoint on some of their more inflammatory Opinions-this promise was about 6 months ago and I've yet to see one counterpoint published.

The Western Herald is the 'face' of Western to many students, Alumni, parents and casual observers. As such, they need to consider the audience they are writing for and offer more balance in their Articles and Opinion writers, or risk offending a large proportion of their readers. And it DOES impact donations.

Last year I donated to some WMU specific items and projects. We'll see if I do it next year. Though I have never attended Hillsdale College I like their philosophy and educational offerings. And I really love their newspaper the 'Hillsdale Collegian' which offers not only conservative thought but actual balanced Opinions. I will probably donate to them this coming year.

THAT'S your reason not to donate? Take it from someone who used to write for the Herald-- nobody reads the Herald.

Beyond that, it's actually independent from the school, by design. So whatever you feel about their bias (I don't doubt it exists), it isn't the school's fault. Nor should the school be involved in what they print.

I'm hardly surprised their viewership is poor, their journalism is poor. Their Editorial stances are poor. And they embrace the arrogance, condescencion and intolerance of most on the political Left. This is the figurehead newspaper for WMU-utterly appalling.

If Western really cared about fundraising from their alumni they wouldn't allow a rag like that to practice their crap journalism. Apparently they don't.

Let them go whine in Lansing to raise their state education allotment a fraction of a point over CMU and EMU. That'll get the job done-NOT.

WMU-as in marketing their athletic programs they market themselves to potential alumni donors-badly. All the bad habits we normally apply to public institutions-no accountability. They should make President Montgomery's yearly bonus tied to how successful he is at encouraging donor support, THEN you'd see some real focus and some real engagement. Not until then.

Yes. This is long overdue. Our competitors did this over a decade ago...

If they are serious about it. The proof is in the pudding.

And the WMU Herald absolutely sucks as the school's newspaper. Someone in a leadership role needs to hold their funding until they get serious about reforming that rag and making it more balanced.

Lay off the Herald. It hasn't been relevant in over a decade, and it has nothing to do with their left-wing bias. Newspapers are dying, plain and simple.

If you're choosing to pull your donations because of the Western Herald, then you're an idiot just looking for any reason to pull it.

Wow, you are one huge loser if you have enough time to focus or even give a crap about the Herald's perceived liberal bias.

Hey, moron---WMU is a, get this! A liberal college campus.

Look you, big brave anonymous message board coward! How brave of you to smear journalism students at your alma mater! How utterly tolerant of you of students who are simply working to develop interests, try new things and explore career paths. Not good enough for you, Bronco Asswipe!

If only these student reporters were less liberal and more conservative! Because as we all know, every young man and woman should aspire to a life of hypocrisy, selfishness, racism, homophobia and bigotry. They should hate the poor and minorities. Then, you, Bronco Asswipe, will finally rain your generosity on these student reporters, and deserving so!

F4ck you.

EXCELLENT !

The recent "Meet and Greet" held at the Westin in Southfield was outstanding, well attended,
and greatly appreciated by the WMU Alumni.

It was appropriately noted, that there are between 30 and 40,000 WMU Alumni in the area.
Hopefully, this is "The Beginning of the Beginning"!

Go Broncos !

The Begging of the Beginning ?

After several "Meet and Greet" events, it seems that the Alumni
potential in the Metro Detroit Area has become evident.

The realization that 30,000 to 40,000 WMU Alumni this area, that could "participate"
in Alumni Activities, leading to more public awareness of WMU,
and promotion of OUR UNIVERSITY to attract new students and donations, is long overdue.

Hopefully, there are Plans, Strategies, and Goals to further promote Western Michigan University throughout the State.

Let's see what the commitment from WMU is to this side of the state. We've had 'starts' in the past, but they fizzled after a year or two.

I remember back when Tom Wonderling was hired at AD at Western back in 1982 and he promptly hired Jack Harbaugh for football, Vernon Payne for basketball and Bill Wilkinson for hockey. They had a few dinners and events over in metro Detroit and my wife and I participated in some of them. The problem was, Harbaugh's record got worse every season, Payne didn't pan out and only Wilkie was around for to build a program. And Tom Wonderling got fired for some expenditure that wasn't approved or something like that. Good intentions by WMU, but the whole thing fizzled out within a couple of years.

It was great for Alumni over here when we had a football game or two at Ford Field, the turnout was impressive. We even beat Illinois once-I was there for that. Had dinner with DB and Chipdip after the game. I was really nice. But not enough carry-through.

WMU has never marketed well on the east side, be it to our alumni or prospective students. I'm confident that this president sees that as a major issue moving forward.

As for the alumni events you all keep talking about, I'm not sure those will ever happen with regularity.

Outreach on the east side needs to happen IMO but not via football in Detroit. Not only have the fans on that side not showed up in the past but it takes a home game away from the students, and really the experience is for them.

Besides, if we can become a regular in the MACC then problem solved!
