WHAT'S UP
Duck head coach Bill Steffen and assistant coach Keri Sanchez welcome their former mentor, head coach Anson Dorrance, and No. 1 North Carolina for their first-ever visit to Pape' Field in Eugene. Steffen served as a Tar Heel assistant from 1992-95 before taking over the Oregon program in February 1996, and Sanchez was a three-time NCAA all-tournament team selection and four-time national champion. So far this season, the Ducks have played top-25 opponents in five of their first nine matches this season (including exhibitions), to prepare for a rigorous conference slate that includes five NCAA veterans from last year, and two others that made the postseason in 2000. This weekend's match is the fourth in a nine-match stretch in the state of Oregon (including six in Eugene). Last weekend the Ducks beat Wisconsin-Green Bay, 4-2, Sunday, and fell to then-unbeaten Pacific, 4-0, Friday, in the Nike Tournament in Corvallis.

TOP DUCKS
Senior Amanda Orand made the most of an unexpected start Sunday against Wisconsin-Green Bay with her first two career goals and second-ever assist, and now leads the team this season in goals (2), assists (1), points (5) and shots on goal (5). The week before against then-No. 23 Utah in Eugene, freshman Mele French claimed her first career goal. The Mililani, Hawai'i native French paces the team in shots (15), and ranks second in shots on goal (4), points (3), goals (1) and assists (1). Senior Sarah Denner claimed the Ducks' first goal of the season vs. then-No. 13 Florida State. On defense, senior captain Sarah Peters (1.88 GAA, 27 saves, 11 GA) returns for her third season as the Ducks' starting goalkeeper after ranking second in the Pac-10 in saves (101) in 2001. The defender corps features a pair of captains, seniors Lindsey Peterson and Robi Thayer. The Duck offense marches on without eight of its top nine scorers from 2001 after a season-ending knee injury to sophomore forward Nicole Garbin in mid-August.

SERIES VS. NORTH CAROLINA (0-1)
The Ducks lost their only meeting against the Tar Heels, 6-0, at Fetzer Field in Chapel Hill, N.C. in 2000. UNC stored twice early in the first period (5:07 by Alyssa Ramsey and 6:09 by Kim Patrick), then four times in the second half. Current Ducks playing in that match included starters Sarah Peters (57:09, 4 goals against, 8 saves) and Lindsey Peterson, and Lindsey Werdell and Dara Wone who played as reserves. UNC returnees from that affair include then-starter and senior Leslie Gaston (2 shots, 1 goal), and then-reserves and current juniors Jordan Walker (2 shots), Carmen Watley (5 shots, 1 goal), Catherine Reddick (6 shots, 1 goal) and Jane Smith (1 shot).

NORTH CAROLINA PREVIEW
The unbeaten Tar Heels (7-0-1) are the consensus #1 in all four national polls with their only blemish a season-opening 1-1 tie with Nebraska as they outshot the Huskers 18-14 and tied matters late at 72:28 on a goal by Alyssa Ramsey. Since then, they've won seven straight, including decisions over ranked opponents USC (2-0, 9/1), Washington (5-1, 9/8), Texas A&M (4-1, 9/13) and Texas (3-2, 9/15). Last weekend they edged Marquette, 4-1, and Florida International, 6-0, in Durham, N.C. Four Tar Heels are in double digits scoring-wise in 2002 - Lindsey Tarpley (8G, 3A), Alyssa Ramsey (7G, 4A), Susan Bush (2G, 7A) and Mary McDowell (4G, 2A). Defensively, goalkeeper Aly Winget has started five of the last six contests (1.11 GAA, 5 GA, 24 saves) with a pair of shutouts shared with Tyler Griffin. In his 24th season as head coach, Anson Dorrance has led his alma mater to 17 of 21 possible national championships (the first the 1981 AIAW crown), 14 of 15 ACC titles (began in 1987), and a 518-23-12 record during his tenure. A five-time women's coach of the year, he also guided the U.S. national team to victory in inaugural Women's World Cup in 1991. Individually, his players have won 11 National Player of the Year honors.

COACH BILL STEFFEN
Bill Steffen continues in his seventh year as the Ducks' head coach and has directed the program since the athletic department added women's soccer in 1996. He has a 36-73-10 record in Eugene, after previously serving as an assistant coach at North Carolina ('93-95), and helped the Tar Heels to two NCAA titles and another top-four finish.

ANOTHER GRUELING SLATE
Head Coach Bill Steffen again put together one of the nation's toughest schedules with 10 opponents in preseason polls by the NSCAA, Soccer America, and/or Soccer Times. Schools included North Carolina (2/1/2), UCLA (3/9/5), Portland (4/2/3), Texas A&M (5/10/11), Stanford (12/7/6), California (15/14/16), Florida State (17/13/16), Washington (22/12/18), Arizona State (-/22/25) and USC (-/23/-). Another team, No. 23 Utah, is among the Soccer Times top 25 - its first year ever in any rankings - after upsetting Portland and Kentucky already in '02.

LAST WEEKEND'S RECAP
CORVALLIS, Ore. (9/20, 22) - The Ducks' perseverance paid off Sunday with a deluge of goals early that led to a a 4-2 decision over Wisconsin-Green Bay in the Nike Tournament at Oregon State University's Paul Lorenz Field. Senior Amanda Orand capitalized off a late and unexpected starting call and tallied three shots, her first two career goals (at 10:24 and 14:10), and second career assist (on sophomore Kelly Baird's goal at 12:59) in the opening 15 minutes. Her two goals and five points just missed the Oregon records of three and six, held by current undergraduate assistant coach Chalise Baysa. The Salem, Ore., native Orand almost added a third goal on her fourth and final shot in the 79th minute that floated just over the crossbar. Freshman Caitlin Gamble added the Ducks' other goal (at 62:32) and became the second freshman to score this season, on an assist from freshman Jessica Fetzer. Team-wise, the Ducks dominated the tempo and finished with sizable advantages in shots (28-8), shots on goal (16-6), and corner kicks (6-1), with the Phoenix up only on goalkeeper saves (12-4). In net for the Ducks, starting goalkeeper Sarah Peters blanked the Phoenix for the first 58:00 of the game before redshirt junior Mary Etter - a two-time All-America discus thrower for the Ducks - saw her first action on the pitch for the Ducks, and played the remaining 32:00. In Friday's weekend opener, the Ducks held a advantages in shots (15-14) and corner kicks (4-2) over then-unbeaten Pacific, but still fell 4-0. Freshmen Cristan Higa led the squad in shots (4) - one of nine players to log attempts - and senior goalkeeper Sarah Peters collected five saves. Last weekend was a key one for the roster of 24 healthy players, with 23 playing against Pacific and 24 going against Wisconsin-Green Bay.

SUDDEN IMPACT
The Ducks have 12 newcomers on their roster this year, including 10 freshmen, one sophomore transfer, and one junior walk-on. Among the additions, sophomore midfielder Christine Mintz arrives from UConn, and played 17 games and started seven for last year's NCAA Sweet 16 finalists. This season she has started every contest for the Duck midfield. Newcomers that have started matches this year include five freshmen (# of matches in ()) -- forward Mele French (3), midfielders Cristan Higa (6), Caitlin Gamble (1) and Carlie Ashcraft (3), and defender Jessica Fetzer (6) -- and sophomore Christine Mintz (6).

ON THE TUBE
The Ducks' upcoming match at No. 6 Portland will be shown live and tape delay twice by Action Sports Network (Wed. 10/9, 8 p.m. PT, Thu. 10/10, 9:30 a.m. PT) -- go to their web site (http://www.ascn.tv) for a complete list of affiliates in Oregon, Washington and California. The Ducks' early season stop against Florida State was broadcast live by the Sunshine Network.

STARTING STREAKS
Senior goalkeeper Sarah Peters has started 26 straight matches for the Ducks dating back to the Stanford match in 2000 (11/3, 4-0 loss), and tops on the team. Senior co-captain and defender Lindsey Peterson and junior midfielder Lindsey Werdell are next in line at 24 straight, as all three have started every match last season (18) and this year (6).

SQUAD BREAKDOWN
The Duck roster features 28 players from six states and provinces, including California (10), Washington (7), Oregon (5), Utah (3), Hawaii (2) and British Columbia (1).

FROM THE PLATTER TO THE PITCH
A walk-on early in fall practice, redshirt junior and discus standout Mary Etter appeared in her first game last weekend as the Ducks' second-string goalkeeper. The Everett, Wash., native played 32 minutes, made one save and allowed two goals vs. Wisconsin-Green Bay. A two-time discus All-American for the Ducks (eighth in 2000 and 2002), Etter registered 13 career shutouts on the pitch as a three-year prep letterwinner and sophomore season MVP for Snohomish HS, the 1997 state champs. Sophomore Domenique Lainez began the season second on the Ducks' depth chart, but will miss at least four weeks because of a serious ankle sprain from early September.

IN THE PAC-10
Duck returnees from the 2001 Pac-10 rolls include Nicole Garbin (game-winning goals, third-tie, 0.22 avg. (5 GWG/18 games; assists per game, 10th, 0.28 avg. (5 assists/18 games), and Sarah Peters (saves, second, 101, 5.61 avg.; shutouts, seventh, 3, 0.17 avg.).

INJURY REPORT
The squad has lost three players in the first month of the season with one, sophomore forward Nicole Garbin, likely out for the season. Last year, the Wailuku, Hawai'i native Garbin paced the team last year in assists (5) and ranked second in goals (5) and points (15). Backup keeper Domenique Lainez suffered a serious right ankle sprain (9/5), and will miss at least four weeks, and freshman forward Andrea Valadez suffered a right knee sprain in a Florida practice (8/22) and is also out at least four weeks. Freshman midfielder Cassidy Kolb began the year on injured reserve and will likely redshirt this season, rehabbing after ACL surgery.

A LEAGUE OF HER OWN
For the second straight season in 2002, seventh-year assistant coach Keri Sanchez starred in the backfield for the Boston Breakers of the WUSA (Women's United Soccer Association). In 2002, she posted nearly twice as many shots (11) as any other defender on the team, started 13 games and played in a total of 16 contests. The previous year in 2001, she also played on the U.S. National Team.

BAYSA ON BOARD
Making her debut as a first-year undergraduate assistant coach, Chalise Baysa joins the staff after a heralded playing career for the Ducks. The Oak Harbor, Wash., native ended her career last fall with nine school records, including categories for goals (career, 31; season 9, game 3), shots (career 168), points (career 69), assists (game 3), game-winning goals (career 6), games played (season 20) and started (season 20). After her senior season in 2001, she won the department's Jackson Award as its top female student-athlete, and was a three-time Pac-10 second-team honoree (1998, '99, '01).

LIGHTS PLEASE
With the addition of lights to Pape' Field and nearby Kilkenny (Football) Practice Fields, Oregon played its first ever home night game vs. Gonzaga (9/6), a 1-0 loss to the Zags. The Ducks will host four other Friday night games in 2002 (all at 7 p.m.) - vs. Portland State (10/4), Washington (10/11), Arizona (10/25) and Oregon State (11/8). The schedule-makers were consistent on the Sunday side, too, with all four home matches scheduled for 1 p.m.
