The University of Oregon volleyball battled the 20th-ranked Washington State Cougars in front of 1,445 raucous fans at Bohler Gym in Pullman, eventually falling 30-27, 30-19, 30-18, to drop to 11-5 overall, 0-2 Pac-10. Washington State improves to 11-0, 2-0.
Senior middle blocker Lindsay Closs led the Ducks with 11 kills, two blocks and two service aces while hitting .353 for the night. Freshmen Dariam Acevedo and Kelly Russell added nine and eight kills, respectively and freshman outside hitter Jaclyn Jones added four kills.
"I thought we prepared well and were very competitive," Oregon head coach Carl Ferreira said. "We had a high level of intensity and played with great emotion, but there are things we still need to work. I have all the confidence that this team will come together and we will improve on those things."
Oregon kept it close in the first game tying the game at 12 after a rare attacking error by Washington State senior LaToya Harris. A kill by Harris on the next play gave the Cougars the lead again, but the Ducks pulled within a point, 16-15, later after a kill by Jones. After Washington State took its largest lead, 28-22, Oregon rallied back, scoring on a kill and an ace by Closs and pulling within three points, 28-25, following another Cougar attack error. Despite scoring later on two-consecutive possessions, the Cougars held off Oregon to win 30-27. The Ducks hit .313 in the game, led by Closs, who had eight kills in eight attempts with no errors. The Cougars hit only .250 in the game, but outkilled the Ducks 18-15.
Washington State controlled the tempo early in the second game, taking a 6-1 lead behind strong serving by Adrian Hankoff. Oregon eventually got into an offensive rhythm, scoring on a kill each by Amanda Porter and Closs. Closs then tallied her second ace to pull the Ducks within six points, but Oregon was never able to get any closer than that. The Cougars went ahead by as many as 11 points, eventually winning 30-19 after an attack error by Oregon.
Offensively, Washington State again took control in the third game and outkilled the Ducks 21-11. The Cougars also hit .545 in the game while Oregon hit just .156.
"There really was a different feeling tonight," said Closs despite the Oregon setback. "We moved on and instead of looking back we continued to look forward to the next play. As we play more matches with a consistent line up we are going to continue to get better and more comfortable."
