Volleyball Drops 3-0 Decision To Washington
Freshman Dariam Acevedo has six kills in her first match with the Ducks.

Sept. 20, 2002

SEATTLE, Wash. --

The University of Oregon volleyball team opened Pac-10 play Friday evening, falling 30-19, 30-27, 30-21, to the University of Washington in front of 641 fans at Bank of America Arena in Seattle, Wash. Oregon is 9-4 overall, 0-1 Pac-10 while the Huskies improve to 10-1, 2-0.

"We weren't able to control the match in terms of serving and passing," Oregon head coach Carl Ferreira said. "We are a young team with tremendous talent and a great growth potential. We just need to keep improving and preparing for every match."

Defensively, Oregon outdug the Huskies 45-36, led by junior Lindsay Murphy's 12 digs. Setter Jodi Bell and Lauren Westendorf added seven digs each. Offensively, Washington held the advantage, 44-35, in kills and had 10 service aces on the night.

Senior Lindsay Closs led the Ducks with 11 kills and three blocks while freshman Kelly Russell added nine kills and three digs. Freshman Dariam Acevedo, who had been playing with the Puerto Rican national team and missed the Ducks' preseason matches, finished her first match with six kills and three digs.

"We are a really young team and at times we had four freshman on the floor," Russell said. "But I think we're learning and growing with every match. We need to continue to prepare ourselves to come out and win when we play."

The Ducks trailed early in Game 1, falling behind 13-7 after a kill by outside hitter Kaitlin Leck. Closs ended the Washington rally and Acevedo followed with her first kill at Oregon to make the score 13-9. The Huskies took their biggest lead15-21 before Oregon rallied to pull within four points, 22-18, after a solo block by Closs. But the Ducks never got any closer in the game and the Huskies used an 8-1 run to win 30-19.

In the second game it was Oregon that took the lead early going ahead 7-3 after a kill by Kelly Russell. Washington tied the game at nine after a kill by Leck and the teams traded points throughout. The match was tied at 26 after a kill by Acevedo, but Washington scored two consecutive points to go ahead 28-26. Acevedo pulled Oregon within a point with a kill on the next play, but a kill by Paige Benjamin and an attacking error by the Ducks gave Washington a 2-0 lead in the match heading into the third game.

After three consecutive service aces by Benjamin in the third game, Washington held an 8-4 advantage and later extended its lead to 21-12 after an ace by Kara Bjorklund. Oregon wasn't able to narrow the deficit and dropped the final game, 30-21.

The Ducks continue Pac-10 action tomorrow evening versus No. 20 Washington State.

No. 20 Washington State Defeats Volleyball 3-0
Lindsay Closs led Oregon with 11 kills and hit .353.

Sept. 21, 2002

Box Score

The University of Oregon volleyball battled the 20th-ranked Washington State Cougars in front of 1,445 raucous fans at Bohler Gym in Pullman, eventually falling 30-27, 30-19, 30-18, to drop to 11-5 overall, 0-2 Pac-10. Washington State improves to 11-0, 2-0.

Senior middle blocker Lindsay Closs led the Ducks with 11 kills, two blocks and two service aces while hitting .353 for the night. Freshmen Dariam Acevedo and Kelly Russell added nine and eight kills, respectively and freshman outside hitter Jaclyn Jones added four kills.

"I thought we prepared well and were very competitive," Oregon head coach Carl Ferreira said. "We had a high level of intensity and played with great emotion, but there are things we still need to work. I have all the confidence that this team will come together and we will improve on those things."

Oregon kept it close in the first game tying the game at 12 after a rare attacking error by Washington State senior LaToya Harris. A kill by Harris on the next play gave the Cougars the lead again, but the Ducks pulled within a point, 16-15, later after a kill by Jones. After Washington State took its largest lead, 28-22, Oregon rallied back, scoring on a kill and an ace by Closs and pulling within three points, 28-25, following another Cougar attack error. Despite scoring later on two-consecutive possessions, the Cougars held off Oregon to win 30-27. The Ducks hit .313 in the game, led by Closs, who had eight kills in eight attempts with no errors. The Cougars hit only .250 in the game, but outkilled the Ducks 18-15.

Washington State controlled the tempo early in the second game, taking a 6-1 lead behind strong serving by Adrian Hankoff. Oregon eventually got into an offensive rhythm, scoring on a kill each by Amanda Porter and Closs. Closs then tallied her second ace to pull the Ducks within six points, but Oregon was never able to get any closer than that. The Cougars went ahead by as many as 11 points, eventually winning 30-19 after an attack error by Oregon.

Offensively, Washington State again took control in the third game and outkilled the Ducks 21-11. The Cougars also hit .545 in the game while Oregon hit just .156.

"There really was a different feeling tonight," said Closs despite the Oregon setback. "We moved on and instead of looking back we continued to look forward to the next play. As we play more matches with a consistent line up we are going to continue to get better and more comfortable."

Freshman Dariam Acevedo posts her first double double of the season (13 kills, 14 digs).

Sept. 23, 2002

Box Score

CHENEY, Wash. - The University of Oregon volleyball team dropped a 30-25, 30-21, 22-30, 30-20 decision to No. 22 Eastern Washington in a non-conference match Monday evening in Cheney, Wash. With the loss, the Ducks fall to 9-6 overall, 0-2 Pac-10 and the Eagles remain perfect at 13-0. It was just the second time this season that Eastern Washington did not sweep its opponent and only the second game the Eagles have lost in a match thus far.

"This is the best team we have played so far this season," Oregon head coach Carl Ferreira said. "They are very disciplined within their system and they execute well. We did some things well tonight, but we need to execute at a higher level to compete at an elite level."

After dropping games one and two, Oregon came back in the third game and never trailed, taking its biggest lead, 24-13, after a service ace by freshman Jaclyn Jones. Eastern pulled within seven points late, but Lauren Westendorf put the game away with a kill down the line.

Eastern Washington responded in the fourth game by taking a 15-10 lead and never allowing Oregon to take the lead. The Ducks pulled within three points, 15-12, after a kill by Acevedo, but the Eagles rallied again to later take the lead 28-17 after a kill by middle blocker Monica Lynch. The Eagles had 18 kills in the game and committed no hitting errors to post a .529 clip.

Freshman Dariam Acevedo led Oregon for the first time this season, putting up 13 kills and 14 digs for her first collegiate double double. Senior Lindsay Closs added 11 kills, two digs and two blocks. Defensively, Lindsay Murphy had 14 digs and setter Jodi Bell added 10.

Eastern Washington was led by middle blocker Monica Lynch's match-high 16 kills. Janell Ruen also had a double double, putting up 11 kills and 15 digs.

Oregon returns to McArthur Court and Pac-10 action this weekend, hosting California Friday and Stanford Saturday.
