Boise has to pay $5 million to get out of the Big East. If they lose AQ status, it falls to $1 million.

I thought there were rules against placing your football in one FBS conference and your Olympic sports in another which is what prompted Hawaii to join the Big West rather than stay in the WAC...

There are no NCAA rules about this. Some conferences have rules to have all sponsored sports in the same conference, but not all.

I believe that you are referring to the BCS rules for a football conference rather than the NCAA rules for an all sports conference. The WAC cannot count Boise towards their 8 all sports members (BCS) because they do not play all of their sports in the WAC. Is that the rule you were thinking of? I think I got that right, lol...

I also read something about how a few SEC schools play their mens soccer in C-USA. Apparently the soccer championships are here in Birmingham this weekend.

.....The state's powerhouse athletic departments, Alabama and Auburn, don't sponsor men's soccer. Neither does the Birmingham-based SEC, which has two schools (Kentucky and South Carolina) that play men's soccer in Conference USA.....

This is not uncommon. We have associate members in a few sports as well. I just thought football was viewed differently. I was thinking that if you had football in a FBS conference, you couldn't have your other sports in a conference that also offered FBS football. Apparently it may have been a BCS rule not an NCAA rule.

I'm not sure who all is currently, but I'm pretty sure Evansville, SIU and Missouri State have all held associate memberships for at least swim and dive at some point in the past.

Vanderbilt played Men's Soccer in the Sun Belt in the past.

Sure about that? The conference does not currently sponsor men's soccer, I suppose we may have back in the pre-football days, I honestly don't know.
Any older South Alabama or WKU fans have knowledge of the conference ever sponsoring men's soccer? I know WKU had a men's soccer team that was a title IX casualty when they moved up in football, but that time they definitely would have been playing their men's soccer elsewhere, because we certainly didn't sponsor it any time recently.

Google showed the U of Mobile Men's Soccer coach was at USA from 1980-1996, winning SBC coach of the year 12 times.

At USA he had 14 consecutive NCAA Division 1 winning seasons, won the Sun Belt Conference from 1991-1995,...
Partially answers your question...

I know we played our soccer in the MVC when we had it... don't know enough about the soccer program to know what we were doing before that.
The thing that baffles me is that the WAC needs football programs to survive as a conference but they keep adding basketball only schools. What is the plan here? Are they seriously going to drop football?

RE: WAC adds Boise State as Non-football member
My guess is that only 1 FBS program is coming on board at this time, or that 3 are coming on board. Whether that's Lamar, Sam Houston State, Montana, Montana State (doubtful they'd come in alone), Sacramento State, UC Davis, Cal Poly, or Portland State remains to be seen. Adding one would give the WAC 8/12, and adding 3 would give them 10/14. Texas-Arlington will eventually be FBS as well, and by that time it should be possible to find a 10th or 12th school for football.
Adding Boise State keeps the WAC from taking on Cal State-Bakersfield as a full member.

I guess Montana and Montana St is a package deal, but Montana was impressive Fri night. They already have a 25K stadium and it was packed.

The Montanas are who everybody wants. Both have good football and would help keep the conference more western. I wouldn't mind Lamar either. It helps with travel.
