I second Kikis. It's my favorite Mexican food joint and not too far from the utep campus.

I have work colleagues from the East Coast visit often, and they always tell me they could stay here for a full 2 weeks to do nothing but eat, play a little golf on a warm day, or take a day to go snow-skiing in Ruidoso NM (about 1.5 hours away).

There are a couple of vineyards in Southern New Mexico.

But above all, please wash your hands if you shake hands with NMSU Aggies. Have fun.

They do have Carls Jr in the east. Its called Hardee's. Same menu and everything. El Paso used to have Hardees a long time ago. The McDonalds on Vista De Sol and George Dieter used to be a Hardees.

I lived in Missouri and loved Hardees. Did not know it was the same....
Nonetheless, wash your hands if you come in contact with NMSU Aggies!!! 03-lmfao03-lmfao

RE: Question for the UTEP fans in the house
L&J's is the best place for Mexican food by far. It was voted best dive and hole in the wall and expect a short line. Get the steak enchiladas with both sauces, you'll know what I mean when you see it. As for booze, I'm a straight hard booze kind of guy myself which is why I only drink at home, plus the cops seem to be everywhere these days and it's just not worth the grief.

You won't need a gun, this place is pretty safe, very safe, in fact.

Funny thing about Utep is you can walk right onto the field and goof around and nobody will say anything. Another thing is there's no clear beginning or end to the campus, but it's next to a liquer store call Dick Liquers. Can't go wrong there. The down side is that if there's a pretty girl in this town I've yet to see her.

If you want to go out for a drink PM me and I'll send you my number. I don't have a drinking problem, it's stopping that gives me trouble.

GTS: Have a safe trip, pack for various weather, and the Garden (downtown Union District) has a some good 24 yr old scotch and scenery.

Hardee's completely changed after Carl's Jr. bought them out.... if this is the logo you remember, then it's the same thing as Carl's Jr.:

If, however, this is the Hardee's logo you remember, they're long gone. They don't even have the Big Roast Beef sandwich on the menu anymore:

OT Question for the UTEP fans...

Have any of ya'll eaten at Pot Au Feu (I think that's right) Downtown? They had great grub!

I ate there, Big Bun, and El Rincon De Cortez while I was in El Paso for the CUSA Basketball Championship this past year.

El Rincon De Cortez is pretty good.
The truth is that there is a lot of good food and you'll likely hear of too many places to go.
Last time I went to Cattleman's it obviously changed from just a few years ago and I wouldn't go back now unless it has gotten better.

El Paso is one of the safest places in the country - period.
You need a passport to cross the border. I wouldn't drive there unless you have insurance for it. It is fine if you walk over and walk back.
You can essentially stay anywhere in the city if you rent a car and have a map/smart phone. As many have said, there is a place on campus.
The bars are scattered but some places worth going are downtown, Cincinnati St area, and other scattered places.
Hope you have fun!

The Big Roast Beef was what I liked best. What a darn shame...

Lot's to see & do at Cattleman's Steakhouse, such as a hayride tour to a movie filming set of the film "Courage Under Fire" which you can walk around.

Chico's Tacos, an El Paso Tradition:

I also recommend Cappetto's Italian Restaurant on Five Points:
http://cappettos.com/

Don't forget to check out the Cincinnati Street! Lot's of restaurants and bars there.

UTEP fans: Isn't there supposed to be a place that's apparently so good you just HAVE to go there? I've heard Gabriel Iglesias reference it a few times, but I just don't remember the name.

Edit: Nevermind. I remembered it. It was Chicos. Thanks, Proud El Pasoan for posting it before I even asked my question.

That's an acquired taste. Some may think it is gross, while others can eat it for bfast, lunch, and dinner. I eat the round hot dogs, and not the tacos, but can do it everyday.

My favorite restaurants, are:
- Pho Tres Bien (Outstanding Vietnamese) I don't like Asian food, but this place has changed many minds
- Ardovino's (great pizza and italian) one is near the Sun Bowl
- L&J's, Kiki's, Lucy's, and even H&H (have to be among the best Mexican in the nation) even tho they're holes in the wall
- Cattleman's Steakhouse (as stated above) a drive into the desert, but worth it.
- GeoGeske's (also near the Sun Bowl) a little trendier. Their margarita fries are a treat

Just to reiterate what was said earlier, Chicos Tacos is very much an acquired taste. You either love it or hate it.

I'd check out:
Cattleman's Steakhouse
Stateline is pretty good as well
Ardovinos Pizzeria near UTEP campus
Ardovinos Desert Crossing (Same name, but different place)
L&J/Lucy's/Carlos & Mickeys
GeoGeskes or Crave for trendier eats.

Finally, another place you may want to check out that has proven to be quite a hit with out of towners I've taken there (which surprises me since I don't consider it a very noteworthy place, although I love it)
....El Taco Tote

That sounds good. Actually, all of the places you named sound good. But if I had to start somewhere, I'd probably go to Cattleman's first. Steak is my favorite food. 03-lmfao Still, eating at all of those places would be worth a good week of vacation.

Bump for newfound relevance.

Looks like a return trip is in order. And hopefully without me being CRAZY sick this time. Though I still had a good time with smn156 even with a fever of 102.
