Should UMD fire Edsall?
http://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/col...story.html

The first of many public calls to fire the new coach. Here's the rub: He has a 5 year, $10MM contract ($2MM per year). So to buy him out, we have to make sure that the new coach will bring in an extra $2MM to cover it.

You must fired the 9-win ACC coach of the year. And you want to fire the new coach after one year?

You're Maryland, not Notre Dame. You're merely paying the price for firing a 9-win coach just like Nebraska did when they canned Solich.

He's not going to be fired, but there's not much room to fall. I guess he can go 0 and 12 next year.

Everybody gets at least 2 years. Most people don't even agree with Gill being fired today at Kansas even though Kansas was truly bad on an apocalyptic scale.

I think he gets a couple more years to see what he can do. He did alright at UConn so who knows he may turn it around.

Most schools need to at least give their head coaches 4 years or they'll have trouble attracting a decent new coach. I don't think Maryland should fire him now or could if they wanted to. They just cancelled 7 sports. The only way they could get rid of him is if enough pissed off donors are willing to put up the buy out money.

Does UMd have any money to fire Edsell - even if they wanted to? They are going to cut 7-8 sports and have a $17 million hole in the athletic department, right?

You overpaid for him, and now you're stuck with him.

RE: Should UMD fire Edsall?
UMD basically hired Dave Wandstedt without the pedigree (on the field only). I've made this comparison to other UCONN fans in the past, and they could not accept the fact that Edsall's coaching style is almost a carbon copy of Wanny's. You're going to have to give him at a minimum one more season. Did I read correctly that Edsall tried to install a spread offense? That is probably the biggest reason he failed. He should go back to a pro style set because this is what he knows and this is how he's built UCONN in the past. I'm not sure how good of a recruiter he is, but I'm sure that recruiting for UMD will bear more fruit for him than trying to get kids to go to UCONN.

Bottom line, you're forced to give his 2 more years. Despite his arrogance and overall demeanor, I think the guy is competent to get UMD consistently to 7 - 9 win seasons every year. He'll never get you to the ACC championship game though, which is why Pitt fired a coach that Edsall was very similar to when it came to coaching skills and philosophies.

He's not going to get fired yet, obviously.

I think he's probably better than Wannstedt because he did more with less at UConn while Wannstedt was constantly doing less with more at Pitt.

I still think he is a Wanny clone but I understand your points. Edsall has the same mindset on defense as Wanny, and Edsall prefers to play a smashmouth football brand, like Wanny, and run clock in order to preserve a lead. Edsall had a tendency to coach not to lose than try to win it all - like Wanny.

IMO, when your philosophy is to "take the air out of the ball", you can minimize your weaknesses by not exposing them because you are "running clock"; however, you will also minimize your potential strengths by taking your foot off the accelerator. That is what made Edsall and Wanny "different" to most people. Edsall minimized exposing this teams weaknesses by chewing up the clock while Wanny did not allow his teams enough opportunities to put games away. Two sides of the same coin IMO.

I thought Edsall kept the spread that was already there? He didn't want a drastic switch because he didn't have the players to implement it?

RE: Should UMD fire Edsall?
My sister went to UConn so I'm kinda familiar with UConn. Edsall seemed to be a pretty decent in game coach but sucked as a recruiter. The dude from Cuse is already a better recruiter (probably a worse in game coach though), so maybe UConn will get out of the 70's in the scout and rivals ratings. But doesn't seem to have made a good hire.

RE: Should UMD fire Edsall?
I agree that a big part of Wannstedt's problem was that he didn't coach to win. The worst part of that, in my opinion, was that it rubbed off on the team and now we're stuck with players who have the same mentality this year even though Wannstedt is gone.

In a way Wannstedt was the perfect coach for Pitt. If something bad could possibly happen, it would happen to a Wannstedt coached team. I very sincerely hope that Graham is able to buck the trend on that because for the most part that has become a part of Pitt's culture, too.

Rumor has it that the Jags might give him a look and take him off our hands.

No! They should give him a lifetime contract. And a nick name. He really needs a nick name. I seem to remember a car named Edsel....

I can absolutely see the Wanny-Edsall comparisons. To be honest, neither Wanny nor Wlat were terrible coaches. Both are 1-A level IMO...just not quite good enough to get a program over the hump.
