BYU turns down the Big East
Quote:Report: BYU won't join Big East

Brigham Young won't be part of the Big East's westward expansion.

Negotiations between the rebuilding conference and BYU have broken off, a person familiar with the negotiations told The Associated Press. The person spoke Tuesday on condition of anonymity because the conference and school have not been making their talks public.

"BYU to the Big East is dead. It's not going to happen," the person said.

BYU athletic department spokesman Brett Pyne said in an email that school officials declined a request for comment.

The Big East was trying to add BYU as part of its plan to expand westward and become a 12-team football league.

At issue are television rights. The person says BYU wanted to retain the rights to its home football games and the league could not agree to that.

No other school in a major conference has such a deal.

bit, you know the answer to this. And I don't view this as BYU turning down the Big East but what it really is the Big East isn't that desperate to let someone dictate the terms.

Both sides kicked the tires. Getting BYU into the BE would have been a HR but I didn't expect it to happen....because BYU always does things on their terms.

If the B12 couldn't work a deal for them.....then the only way the BE was going to get them was if they basically just let them dictate all of their own terms.

BYU sounds like UT. Last thing BE needs is another version of the LHN.

Well, hold on now. There's nothing wrong with wanting things on your terms. Nothing at all. Undermining other schools, and deliberately weakening conference mates while you're in a conference - and other UT hallmarks - is something quite different.

Longhorn Network is 3rd tier rights: a football game a year, a couple bbal games and some title IX sports. BYU wants to hold onto all their rights. Texas wouldn't dream of what BYU thinks of itself.

This is good news for the Big East. Perhaps they (BE) aren't in the position of non-power their detractor's would have us believe.

Another phony rant against the Big East ....

BYU didn't turn down the Big East; the Big East turned down BYU. Please do some research before posting misleading threads.

The Big East refused to accept BYU's unrealistic terms, just as the Big 12 did.

Agreed, BYU wanted to retain the TV rights to their home games, and the BE laughed and said "Goodluck with that request when trying to join any bona fide conference, See ya." The New Big East is going to be as good as it ever was in the long-term, once it finally officially makes it's expected moves.
