Pretty much. The only ones I would put in the 'great' category would be Oklahoma/Nebraska and Texas/aTm.

And Missouri-Kansas. On the football field, it has never been huge nationally except when they held it at Arrowhead a few years ago but the war between those two states has been going on since prior to the Civil War and the all-time series is virtually deadlocked.

For me: Memphis vs Louisville & Memphis vs Cincy. Both are teams I love to hate!

Here's hoping that WVU / Va Tech can resume now that neither team is in the Big East.
Being reunited with Pitt & Syracuse is good for other ex-BE ACC teams, too.

The sheer number of conference games has killed some good older rivalries already, such as Clemson / Georgia, South Carolina / Florida State, and Miami / Notre Dame. I think the best way to get these back would be to stop counting victories over FCS opponents.

I think the biggest "lost" rivalry so far has to be Oklahoma / Nebraska. That used to be one of the biggest games of the year.

From a UC fan

Basketball: Cincinnati v Memphis, Cincinnati v UNCC, Cincinnati v UAB, Cincinnati v Dayton, and Cincinnati v St. Louis have been lost over the last ten years.

Football: None. UC biggest rivals are Louisville and Miami. Pitt and WVU could have been. Memphis-UC football was never as big at the basketball game. I always felt Memphis-Louisville football was a bigger game for the Tigers.

I wonder what happens over the years to Georgetown-Syracuse (BB), UConn-Syracuse (BB), WVU-Pitt (BB & FB), Texas-A&M (BB & FB) Nebraska-Oklahoma (FB) Nebraska-Colorado (FB), Kansas-Missouri (FB & BB).

And reallignment created some new rivalries that really make a lot of sense: Ohio St - Penn St, Nebraska-Iowa, Nebraska-Minnesota, and Colorado-Utah.

Since when did the latter three become rivalries? Don't they have to play more than one year to create some kind of tradition?

Admittedly, those three aren't great rivalries yet. But I have no doubt that they will become great ones very quickly.

True that! I really miss the VT game. I would love to see an annual game in Charlotte or DC ala the Cocktail Party in Jacksonville, FL.

Many years ago and I mean many, VT and WVU played now and again in Bluefield, at the stadium downtown. The battle in the middle of the coalfields.

4th & 27 broke my heart! I will always consider UC a rival in both sports.

We absolutely hated Huggins. He could give as good as take. So many good basketball games & such great atmosphere. I would love, love to have those back.

Personally, as a UConn fan, I'll miss playing Syracuse in hoops.

UC vs Memphis
UL vs Memphis
UC vs West Virginia had the potential with Huggins versus his former school, similar styles etc.

Meh, it's not like this is the first time UT has cancelled the series because they didn't get their way.

Crying and taking your ball home because you are that spoiled brat who has never been told "no" ever in your life until now is the standard whorn MO.

Syracuse - Penn State, used to be huge. PSU leads series 41-23-5 (69 total meetings)

Syracuse - West Virginia, trophy game, SU leads series 32-27 (58 total meetings)

Syracuse - Rutgers, (never really big time, but many games were played), SU leads series 30-11-1 (42 total meetings)

In the ACC though Syracuse gets reunited with some rivals, and keep Pittsburgh (Pitt is second only to Penn State, in games played against Syracuse).

Syracuse - Pittsburgh, Pitt leads series 33-30-3 (66 total meetings)

Syracuse - Boston College, was just reunited, SU leads series 28-18 (46 total meetings)

Syracuse - Maryland, SU leads series 18-14-2 (34 total meetings)

Syracuse - Miami, Miami leads series 15-7 (22 total meetings)

Syracuse - Virginia Tech, SU leads series 9-8 (17 total meetings)

I miss the VT/WVU series also. MD maintained a game with WVU, I guess VT did not want to.

VT played UVA every year, so when they joined the ACC they could have kept WVA as a non conference game since UVA is now in conference.

DC is more central for the 2 schools than Charlotte, but I'll take the game wherever.

You guys missed a few rivalries that died due to realignment. But I'll give you young'uns a pass on it, since you aren't old enough to remember...

WVU-Penn State
Pitt-Penn State
Syracuse-Penn State

But all of Penn State's old rivals were BEast schools at one time...

VT tried for a few years to. The fan behavior was out of control and getting worse each year so they didn't continue the series.

The only reason VT continued the series the extra 2 years is because of the lawsuit, which forced the ACC to schedule some games against BEast teams...

RE: How many great rivalries have been lost due 2 conf. expansion & division realignment?
Louisville vs Kentucky in football could be lost because Kentucky thinks they need a cup cake game because of Texas A&M and Missouri joining. I think they are mad because Louiville makes more athletic revenue and they know by not allowing Louisville to have that game it will put a little dent in our revenue....The reality is it will hurt them more....We will schedule Indiana & perhaps WKU a little more often..even Miami & Florida State. UK will pick up a D2 team....
And the good old days of Louisville vs Memphis vs Cincinnati every year are gone. As much as we have Memphis booked in Football & Basketball over the next several years, it should just be a good conference game...Bring the TIGERS BACK...

Louisville is a team I will always consider a rival and it was pretty much killed in Comf realignment. We currently have a series with them, and I would like to see it renewed in the future. Also, when c-USA went to a divisional format, it killed the annual "battle for the bell" between usm and Tulane. We still play, but now only twice every four years. Worse, it means I only get to go to NO for the game once every four years. It's always fun taking over the superdome, and making the game like a seventh home game for usm.

The big thing holding up WVU/VT is Beamer, he doesn't want to play in Morgantown. On the flipside Greenberg has tried to schedule us in basketball and we have turned him down. He wanted a game in DC and we wanted a game in Charleston the following year which he wouldn't agree to. No point in playing a random game in DC when we already had Georgetown.

Nobody wants to play there because of the violence. Beamer isn't dodging Morgantown because it is hard to play there as has been suggested. He doesn't mind going to LSU, Nebraska, or Texas A&M.
