That would be close to 200 million per year. If the last offer was 1.4 billion for 9 years, and since then the big east has lost pitt, syracuse, tcu and wvu, I just don't see it happening. If the last deal was for 33 million per year, I can maybe see it doubling, but not much more
Well then, thank god BE is not counting on you for any common sense. Just wait and see what BE will end up with. I am guessing it will be a lot closer to the numbers I predicted.
For the record, the deal BE turned down from ESPN would have paid BE football schools roughly $15.3M per year. You really think BE will settle for much less in an open market?
Let's put it this way, if you're going to pay for a 30 second spot, are you going to pay the same for a big east football game as a big 12, pac 12, SEC or big 10 game? Outside of the big east fans, there isn't too much demand for big east football, especially with out wvu, pitt or tcu
Actually you have inadvertantly swerved into the truth here. You are correct, outside of the east there was limited interest in Big East football. Thats why the move to the west was actually brilliant. They added some winning programs that will make the Big East relevant in the west, where they were not before. As has already been proven, the 140-160 will still be less than other stronger confernces for football. For basketball, the Big East is THE premier conference, so yes, they will get signficantly MORE than other conferences for thier basketball contract.
I don't think the move was for exposure, I believe it was done to keep the AQ status, because with out AQ status, the big east would have as much appeal as the MWC did with BYU, Utah and TCU. Houston, SMU and UCF, do not bring in a brand name, and out of the expansion candidates, only BSU brings a brand, which oddly enough, loses appeal the more they win.
The inventory argument doesn't grab my attention for football, as it is, all the major conferences are playing on all the espn networds non stop on saturdays, but I guess you could fill in the tuesday, thursday slots. I just don't see the value, with out adding brand names.
In some ways I do feel bad for the big east, because I'm sure espn's manipulation is the reason why teams left the big east, but for that reason alone, I think the big east will suffer when negotiating a new TV deal.
Again, you are failing to look at the entire picture. ESPN has plenty of football, but they want more. Perhaps even more importantly, they dont want any competion, and that is exactly what Comcast and Fox are angleing to do. You are entitled to your opinion, but if the Big East is quoting 8-12 to the prospective schools, you can bet they have something better to back it up than an internet bulletin board post. These guys have TV consultants and former TV executives in tow at these meetings. They have a much better handle on it than you are I and they are quoting the 8-12 million per team (football only). Ive given you the reasons that the contract will be much better, but clearly Im not going to convince you so---you will just have to wait and see.
