As for nothing coming from his other gigs...you may have answered that question yourself by identifying the NRA as a totally different type of organization which if as you describe would have provided much greater opportunity for him to be put in situations where something might have happened.

Again, the issue for me is his handling of this. He came off as way less than truthful in the first couple days...not to mention that Politico notified his campaign of their intent to run this story over a week before they did!

You do realize that outside legal counsel retained by most large organizatoins has an hourly rate of $400 or more? Just a couple of weeks of billable time makes an out of court settlement cheaper. Something that drags out in court for months could end up costing multiples more than a quick settlement so large organizations go the quick settlement route. Most "ambulance" chasing attorneys know this and have a general idea of the high end each organization will pay to stay out of court. Cha-Ching 1/3 to the "ambulance chaser" for about a weeks work. Not a bad payday.

If it's going to cost $50,000 to get to the point of getting it thrown out, and if they're willing to settle for $25,000, then why would you not settle? Particularly since the settlement was apparently negotiated not by Cain but by the NRA, which really had no dog in the fight as far a guilt or innocence.

I don't know that those are the actual numbers, but they're probably not far off in 1996 or so. Even if the claim has no merit, you're going to have to do a bunch of due diligence before you can reach that conclusion.

The flip side of the coin is that if there was actual merit, this is a 10x salary lawsuit. I'm guessing her attorney a) knew that, and b) took the case on a contingent basis. So any settlement less than about half a million calls into question the legitimacy of the claims.

You can read whatever you want into whatever information is reported. But a "five figure settlement" which is all that I've seen looks to me a lot more like a BS lawsuit than a legitimate claim. And I've litigated a few, including a few with this subject matter.

Tell me that you were all over Bill Clinton demanding that he resign in the wake of the Monica Lewinsky and other scandals, and I'll give you more credibility on this. But I'm guessing you can't tell me that, at least not honestly.

As for me, I didn't jump all over Bill and I'm not going to jump all over Herman. I think that's a sensible and objective response to both.

I've been watching intrade on this pretty closely. Cain is still at 4%, Newt 9%, and Romney at 70%. A big part of me just wants to put a little coin where the energy is at. I know you guy's like Cain and this is the base of the GOP. I just can't get that 4% out of my head. It wouldn't be at 4% if he had a snowballs chance. Sorry Reb. I really am. I know you support the campaign and you were in on it early. Just not in the tea leaves.
