Yeah right.

Tell me where the rumor is that I put forward in this thread. I put forward and opinion on how ECU may be getting a BE call, and I put forward an opinion on how I think it could improve its image with a different name.

Miko.....Great job of infusing some fun into this board...now..drop it. You have again established your excellence as a fisherman.:ncaabbs:

I wish you were right but I think the Big East has been pretty clear in their actions over the years that they do not want ECU....And it is not because of the name, if so they would have never invited USF or UCF. To suggest we change our name is pure nonsense and to the guy that said we would change it in a heartbeat for an invite to the Big East you are out of your mind. Hell, we are lucky that our name is not UNC-Greenville which is what the UNC system wanted it to be when we moved from college to university status. But in the nature of fun here are few names that may get the Big East's attention.

1) Big East Carolina University
2) Greenville State University
3) University of Central Eastern North Carolina (even though not really correct in location pays homage to the Florida schools that have a problem with geography)
4) University of South North Carolina (See above)
5) University of Carolina or Carolina University (That would make UNC and USC very upset, but I kinda like it. Hey and it works for the Carolina Panthers.)
6) Coastal Plains University
7) University of Down East (Have to be from North Carolina to understand this one)
8) Pitt University (ECU is located in Pitt County)
9) Leo Jenkins University
10) UNC-Greenville ( I would shoot myself)

When you look at the options I think East Carolina University is just fine.

I'm testing out a new name for ECU - per the suggestions in another thread. I think it looks good. Regardless, I think ECU will be next on deck for the BE, because I don't think the invites are going to go off without a hitch, and at least one school will probably get cold feet, like AFA.

Miko, what are you going on about? ECU would never change their name. Plus, there is a Greenville in 32 states. http://askville.amazon.com/states-Greenv...d=49744230

Greenville is the most common name for a city or town in America.

Does one of those Greenville's have a bigger DMA number? Maybe you can put one over on the BE

I find it condescending and disrespectful, and I'm sick of it.

No disrespect intended. There are people in another thread who theorize that this is possibly an issue for ECU regarding perception and invites to BCS conferences. I'm merely trying it out to see if a different name would change the perceptions of some on here. As an outsider, a name like The University of Greensville has a certain appeal. It still has a strong connection to the region of NC that you guys like plus it eliminates the directional name issue that does in fact have a negative connotation when people are looking at schools - especially when they are not very familiar with the school in question.

Are these guys from UNC or NC State? That is how they like to insult ECU.

I prefer we kept our original FTU - Florida Tech University myself.

Judging by your Tampa neighbor - geography doesn't matter - so y'all should be

The history of my school: Founded in 1787 as Pittsburgh Academy. Later, the school name was changed to Western University of Pennsylvania in 1819 to be a sister university to the University of Pennsylvania in Philly. The school finally became the University of Pittsburgh in 1908.

At one point Pitt was a directional U too. I know what I am speaking of.

I've always thought of Pitt as "The University of Western Pennsylvania". When I was younger, I thought PSU "owned" the eastern 2/3 of the state and Pitt "owned" the western 1/3. I never lived in PA, so I was just guessing.

RE: The University of Greenville gaining speed?
South Florida was founded in 1956
Florida Institute of Technology was founded in 1958
Florida Atlantic was founded in 1961
Central Florida was founed in 1963 as Florida Tech (took current name in 1978)
Florida International was founded in 1965
Florida Gulf Coast was founded in 1991

If the real-life USF were named UCF, Florida Atlantic would probably have been named the University of South Florida. What we now know as UCF would have either kept the Florida Tech name, or been named the University of Orlando (although at the time, Orlando State might have been more likely). If USF had been named Florida Gulf Coast at its inception, the current Florida Gulf Coast would have likely been Southwest Florida or Florida International.

No doubt that being in a metro area makes all the difference in quick growth. My dad graduated at what was East Carolina College in 1956.
