What was Golesh Thinking ?
I couldn't believe Golesh went out and high fived Detmer when we sky kicked right to the 40 yard line on ESPN. This was the 3rd kickoff, after the other 2 went to the house. I am tired of hearing how Detmer puts the ball to the endzone, he has just as many out of bounds. I heard an interveiw earlier that we kick between the numbers and outside hash marks deep left. Both kickoffs that got ran back were not close to that spot, other than a shoe string tackle there would have been another one returned later in the game. Coach let your ego go and try something different, or better yet a different kicker and scheme together, its not working!

RE: What was Golesh Thinking ?
Has anyone watched how we cover the kick-offs. I swear that my 7th grade football coach could teach better than what I am seeing out there. It can only be described as pathetic.
Anyone else realize we didn't lay a hand on him on either return? He could have handed it off to his blocker on the second one and he likely would not have been touched either.

I commented on the very same thing at the time of each of those returns. The guy was fast but it wasn't like he was making nifty moves or breaking tackles or anything---it almost seemed as if UT was playing with only 6-7 guys on the field.

Out of bounds might have been good last night. Giving them that kind of field position was ridiculous. Overall I think Detmer is doing pretty well for a freshman. What I don't understand is why we didn't just kick toward the other returner. Of course, I suppose he could always lateral it to Lewis. Yeah, they were 1 tackle away from running a 3rd one back for 6. Unreal.

Demer is the best kicker we've had in years and he's a freshman- I'd like to see the count of OB kicks vs. EZ kicks. On the first KO last night the return guy caught it going backwards- hard to blam ethe kicker for putting it over the guy's head. Detmer has been a huge bright spot on special teams IMO.

RE: What was Golesh Thinking ?
As big of Rocket fan as I am, I can tell you that if my had been a kicker Toledo would be the last place I would send him, with present staff and scheme. We are a joke, I am not trying to blame the kickers as much as the coach. I was told by one of the kickers, if he had realized what Toledo had to offer on kicking game ( No able special teams coaching), he would have walked onto Illinios. We have had 3 years in the bottom of the MAC in this area and the coaches have made no changes, every fan holds thier breath every kickoff. Then a coach is happy with a sky kick at the 40, ridiculous.

Subtle humor in this?
You don't kickoff in jr. High football.
And it's still on the money.

I don't think that the kicker is the problem here. He has some skill and is only a frosh. Good coverage should be able to cover even a bad kick. The kicks may not have been the best ever but, they were decent.

When they offer a scholarship, and tell everyone the ball goes to the endzone 90% of the time, that's a big let down. We have been horrible at special teams since this staff took over.

RE: What was Golesh Thinking ?
Moto - I would have played jr.high in the fall of 91 and 92. Down in ol' Wayne County, we didn't kickoff at least. May be different from league to league.
My favorite part about high school ball wasn't getting to be a part of some amazing D-lines, rather that we finally got to kickoff, and attempt PAT's/FG's on a normal basis... mainly because I was also a kicker. Not alot of DT/K combos - Always loved the look on the other guys' faces when they saw the 300lb kicker jogging out.
