All they have to do is when the BCS contract is up after the 2013 season, do away with the AQ status. Each conference make their contracts with the BCS bowls. Right now there are 5 conferences that have such contracts. Probably will still be the same 5 starting in 2014 because those conferences contain all the big, actually huge name teams like Southern Cal, Texas, Oklahoma, Bama, LSU, Ohio St, Florida St, etc. and so on.

Then the BCS will still have the champ game getting number 1 and 2. The Bowls will be free to replace any team they lose to the champ game by selecting any school available from a list of whatever the BCS wants... such as top 20 or top 25 or top 15 or just any team at all, leaving it up to the bowls.

So no AQ for anyone. You can look over the ratings since the BCS has been in place and see at a glance that there would be years where no BE team would be in a BCS bowl. ACC would have missed one or two also except they will have a contract with the Orange Bowl and will be protected. Almost the old bowl system with a couple of tweaks that allow the SEC and others to have as many BCS bowl appearances as possible.

Texas has shown where everything is going. Eventually the really big-time schools are going to demand a bigger piece of the pie because parity in their conference is not in their best interest. Fact is the fans and supporters of these big-time programs tend to harbor their greatest hate for their fellow conference mates, and will cut their throat given the chance, and they will.

Texas is an outlier in that regard. Texas thinks its more powerful than it is. It commands a lot of power but the Big 4 conferences that would want it all command more power and can dictate the terms to them. I could see Texas finally just pushing hard enough that they collapse under their own weight.

What is more likely to happen is the handfull or so real big-time programs, will start to act like Texas and Notre Dame.

And how many times were upstarts playing in the bigger bowls before the BCS?

How many high profile bowls were teams like Hawaii and BSU playing in pre-BCS?

I think TCU playing in the Rose Bowl trumps ECU in the Peach Bowl.

The BCS has increased access to the top bowls for upstarts.

RE: ESPN Wins
Bearcat 1984, while your theory is a good read and possible for conspiracy theorists to buy into, your knowledge of BCS busters make it all questionable.

ESPN has little pets. Boise State, TCU, Oklahoma, and USC are the pets. USC is on a downward spiral at the moment so ESPN is kinda keeping a distance from it.

Oklahoma has a loss but they still want them to play in the BCS title game.

BSU and TCU have been ranked high for the last few years, but TCU's problem is that they lose a game to a team they shouldn't lose to in theory. Boise State on the other hand keeps winning. Boise will continue to be ranked high until they start losing 2-3 games a year. But they'll continue to be a Top 25 team. Boise State in the Big East is ESPN's dream. TCU in the Big XII is ESPN's dream. Their dream will be complete when those two play for a NC.

Utah wasn't?

Utah, Boise State and TCU have all made 2 BCS appearances. Utah and BSU are 2-0, TCU is 1-1.

Hawaii has made 1 BCS appearance, where they were drilled by Georgia.

BYU has never made a BCS appearance.
