MyBB Most Memorable Games in Campbell Basketball History
We did it for football. Now, since we're gearing up for hoops and our return to the Big South, it will be fun to remember the great basketball games of the past.

I've got a list of a dozen or so games that SID Stan Cole helped me with when he effortlessly reeled-off his favorite basketball games (a few months ago when we talked about the football list).

I'll start it off back on Dec 1, 1984 vs Houston at Clemson's IPTAY Tournament. (I remember listening to this game in Small #215 on WCCE Radio.) Campbell had just lost by 40 at State and by 35 at Clemson. But, the Camels hung with the UH Cougars that were one year removed from Phi Slamma Jamma (Akeem "The Dream" Olajuwan, Clyde "The Glide" Drexler, Michael Young), yet still included Greg "Cadillac" Anderson and Coach Guy Lewis. The game was close throughout, although I can't remember how often Campbell had the lead. The score was tied with 4 minutes left, but Houston ended-up with the win (73-64).

This game really made an impression on me since CU played so well vs a high-profile team, and it was pivotal in changing me from an ACC fan to a Campbell fan.

(The Camels went on to go 5-22 that year.)

What are some other memorable games? Try to guess the others!!

I realize im stating the obvious here, but 3 off the top of my head are the two wins against State and USC in the 93-94 season and the Loss to Duke in the NCAA tournament the year before. I was able to attend the State game as a freshman at CU. Another that stands out to me was the Va Tech game at CU a couple years ago. 1st and only time ACC basketball member played at CU.

We beat UNCG in 2005 or 2006 and we rushed the court. I think we were undefeated, 4-0 or so, and it was huge win for us at the time. In retrospect UNCG were a bad team that year but I still remember it as the only time I rushed the court in Carter.

I'm going with February 6th 2009, Belmont vs Campbell, I have never witnessed a collapse like that in my life. Its amazing what a good coach can do for you. Ive never seen with my own eyes how someone can get COMPLETELY outcoached and outsmarted like that before. 21 points with 15 minutes to go, hell it was 12 with 2 minutes to go. I'm sure Laing has some great excuse for it like "we had to play 4 games on the road in the month of January following an even numbered year. A-sun is just screwing us" or maybe he can do what he is great at and run down the names and memories of his best players like Tarick Johnson and Jonathan Rodriguez. Some of you will argue that last one with me but if you only knew the truth. Why do you think someone is wear number 3 already? Greatest player in the HISTORY of Campbell and we hand out his uniform like its nothing. DISRESPECTFUL

So, Coach K giving out Kyle Singlers number this year was disrespectful? Or Kendall Marshall wearing Ty Lawson's number 5? Butler's Shelvin Mack's number 3 is now being worn again this year by a Freshman? Greivis Vasquez's number 21 was worn by a freshman last year after his departure?

That list took two minutes to look up and I am sure there are countless others.

Listen I don't really care because I love J-Rod, but at the end of the day that DISRESPECTFUL thing doesn't hold water.

Well, the Lawson number makes sense because of UNC's rule that to get a number actually retired they have to be National Player of the Year. And honestly, of that list, none of those players really transcended the game THAT much. Especially not Vasquez.

With that said, I still think J-Rod needs his jersey retired. He helped revitalize the program. Between him and Joe Spinks from the early 90s, those are the only players I think fitting to have their numbers hanging from the rafters (or on the back wall) of Pope.

Just sayin'.

P.S. I've been following the boards periodically and finally decided to join.

I am the same as you Yale. I have been following a while, but never really participated. Probably won't be a regular poster anyways, but its fun.

I will ask this though since you brought it up. You don't think Vasquez was the least likely of that group to transcend the game? He is the only player in ACC history with over 2,000 points, 700 assists and 600 rebounds. He is a two time first team all ACC, an ACC Player of the Year and won the Bob Cousey Award. He also is second all time in scoring at Maryland only behind Juan Dixon (Whose number is still being used) and ahead of Len Bias.

Shelvin Mack only led a mid-major to back to back championship game appearances.

J-Rod is arguable the best player in the history of the CU program. At the time of his accomplishment, he was the 101st player in the history of this great country to have a career of 2,000 points and 1,000 rebounds. He was a three time first team all league performer. However, he was not the Freshman of the Year and was never voted the league's best player by the league's coaches or media. I LOVE J-Rod, as a player and as a person, BUT I don't know if he necessarily transcended the game either.

I guess I am just saying I respectfully disagree that Campbell's coaches and staff fail to realize what type of impact he had on the program and have done everything they can to disrespect him.

RE: Most Memorable Games in Campbell Basketball History
You have to look at the context of those players and the school they went to. I can name 10 GREAT Duke players before I get to Singler. Hell the 91-92 team had 3 guys on it all better than Singler. Mack is the only guy you named from a school that doesnt have an army of great players.

What J-Rod did for Campbell is remotely put us on the map. We went from one of the WORST teams in the NATION to a school that had a reason to build a convocation center. There isnt a guy on this team who holds a candle to him and the only person in CU history in Jonathan's world is Joe Spinks.

Dont use UNC, Duke and Maryland when making comparisons. You have to use teams like Mercer and UNC Asheville.

All I'm saying is ask people on the team why no one was allowed to wear 12 because it was Junard's number.

You know what I will back off of my disrespect comment. Its EGO. There are a ton of people (like me) who believe the reason CU was good is because of J-Rod and not the coach. He is just trying to get J-Rod out of peoples minds.

I know I am never going to convince you of what I think and I firmly believe what I think.

Well you mentioned Mercer so I looked. James Florence's number was and is being used by R.J. Miskimon this year and last.

Also was 12 asked for by anyone this year? I do know Rico wore 3 in high school and prep ball.

Also you do realize they broke ground on the convocation center prior to J-Rod's Freshman year? September 2006. So I don't know if he or any player should get credit for that unless they gave money.

Again I think this is being blown out of proportion. However anyone and everyone is entitled to their opinion. I just don't see why all the hate for the coach who last time I checked recruited J-Rod.

To be honest, I heard that it was one of the assistant coaches that is no longer with the team that was able to recruit J-Rod. He has deep Florida roots. J-Rod needs to be immortalized by CU some how, whether it be CU HOF or retired number..... but I'd like to see both.

I think retiring his number might be a bit excessive because very few schools retire ANY numbers..retiring a jersey, however, is very likely, but I will guarantee as soon as he is eligible the HOF will happen.

As far as the assistant coach is concerned, you are probably correct. Bobby Kennen had and has deep roots in the state of Florida, but last time I checked he was on coach's staff, hired by coach, and so on and so forth, which in my book means he was recruited by the head man. There are not many head coach's in college basketball who are considered "active" recruiters. They only visit once interest is shown by a recruiting coordinator. That's at every level of Division I basketball.

Here's another....Feb. 18, 1999 vs Georgia State

Although they had "Georgia State" on their jerseys, it felt like Campbell was really playing Maryland, Georgetown, Georgia Tech, and Alabama all wrapped-up into one with legendary Terps coach Lefty Driesell and all his big-time D-I transfers. The Camels were down big but came back to win 80-73 in Carter Gym.

RE: Most Memorable Games in Campbell Basketball History
January 16, 1993 - The "Light" Game vs Radford.

I took a couple of co-workers/ACC grads (UNC and Wake) to this game to experience real big-time college hoops in Carter Gym! We arrived a little late and had to wait to enter until after they finished shooting free throws on the entrance end of the court. The only seats left were up in the corner next to the electrical breaker box.

Campbell was up 87-84 with a few seconds left. Radford's Doug Day (I believe he led the nation in made 3s) launched an on-line shot from around mid-court to tie, but the ball hit one of the low-hanging lights in Carter and fell straight down to the floor. Dead ball went back to us and the game was over.

What a great game for those ACC guys to experience Carter!

A few weeks later at Radford, CU was up 89-84 in the final seconds and a Campbell player hurled the ball toward the ceiling lights to mock the ending of the earlier game!
