There is a HUGE thread on who will win the Big East next year on UConn board, pretty similar to the smack I have seen on the WVU/UofL Boards this week.

On the Louisville Radio Show today they even mentioned the amount of traffic between the Big East schools and the passion each has for their programs-(the mention Inner EER infection on the Louisville board).

I have no problem with it except if you are going to rag on a program at least know the facts. There is some guy on the UConn board named RiverguyVT dissing Louisville and he knows nothing about our program. Some UofL guys went over there and let him know the facts then he left.

I always thought that the smack talk was actually worse during bball season then in football.....the football league is small and has almost always been under attack by the media so BE fans generally root for BE teams...no such politness exists in bball where the fans of the Catholic schools are very resentful of the way the football schools dominate the bball league....the level of smack before, during and after the WVU/Nova BE semi final was as heated as the game..

The nonfootball schools are resentful? Well, it could be argued by most that they should kiss the ground they walk on and thank you football guys for letting them simply exist with you all. The Big East hoops is great of course, but look at the real b'ball powers right now: UConn, Syracuse, Louisville, Cincinnati, Pittsburgh, West Virginia and Villanova. Notice only one doesn't play football.

Plus they get to have year round exposure of the name Big East unlike the only other "power conference" (Atlantic 10) that does not play Div 1-A football.

Maize trust me the UConn fans are still new to big time Football--It takes a village to raise a child

They are getting better but many UConn fans are still learning about Div 1 FB.

Most of them are good people/posters just a few of them are really ignorant.

Texas I not mad, but I am actually happy with the bickering. You see we come from a place that doesn't have this kind of passion. The only schools in our old conference that have this kind of fan base is Memphis, USM and ECU.

Guys, keep in mind that RiverguyVT is in fact a VT fan who for some reason also has an interest in UConn. Perhaps he lives in CT or something.

Mark, for the most part, what you said is true and you are a good guy so please don't take it personally when I say that a few of the absolute Pr*cks that post on the Syracuse Rivals board, such as Zak, Kaiser, etc...well, let's just say that I'd like to introduce my foot to their teeth. :)

Glad to see RU fans are the only ones. Then again we often have our own bone to pick with a few of your posters. And certainly both Cuse and Conn have a bone to pick with a few of our obnoxious guys. Basically every board has a few jerks hence I just can't see getting my blood boiling over it.

Nevertheless, we want that BCS bid this year; we've been paying our dues for a long time, and we can't wait!

Bring it on. [Image: punch.gif]

I second the Zak comment. That guy is a complete douche-bag.

Which one is that? The school that beat Rutgers the last time they met? Or beat Temple in 2003? Or lost by a touchdown to Pitt seven years ago, 48-41?

Folks, Villanova plays football. Pretty good football, too. I can't say Georgetown would win any games against Big East I-A teams right now, but Villanova could.

And Hoya, Villanova will have its shot again on September 10th against Rutgers. However, this time I think the Buffanova days will be behind us. We may go 5-6 or 2-9 or 8-3...but I think the two games that RU will win no matter what will be Buffalo and Villanova.

You won't get me to disagree with you--zak and kaiser are acquired tastes.

I tend to ignore them--occasionally they'll have something humorous but I can see how they piss off most.

TexanMark - It looks like SU fans are going at it with UCONN fans on the Boneyard.com. Things are getting ugly and it is starting to sound like the old UCONN-BC bickering. If we win somehow this year on national TV, things will get real ugly. Of all the teams we are playing this year, I hope we beat the snot out of SU and G TECH.

You are correct. You gotta realize most of it is bickering for the sake of bickering. I guarantee within 5 years that Syracuse and UConn will have an intense football rivalry. This stuff helps fan the flames. This is not a bad thing---the NBE needs some intense rivalries.

The funny thing from Cuse fans' perspective is some of the UConn fans are not well rounded enough to discuss football intelligently--and this makes the Cuse fans sound arrogant from UConn's perspective.

Just because Louisville is favored to win the Big East doesn't mean they are actually going to win it. They still have to play the games you know.

That might be true for some, but I can tell you most UCONN fans have plenty of knowledge about college football. I mean. c'mon, it is not like we were all born yesterday or just came over to the U.S. from another country. Most of us have been watching pro and college football for years.

I think Syracuse is in for a rude awakening. I seriously believe UCONN, with the support of the state, has the potential to rival PENN STATE in the East. Maybe not this year or next, but they will get there cause UCONN usually delivers if they put their mind to it.

In 10 years, I can see the following:

1. UCONN play in a 65k+ stadium
2. Sellouts every game with FB tickets hard to come by
3. Rank in the national top-20 on a regular basis with teams going to the BCS or higher ranking bowls
4. We will compete for top recruits from the country. UCONN is already a national brand name. I see UCONN stuff for sale here in SF.

Look, UCONN is putting a ton of investment into the FB program and our recruiting is getting better and better every single year. Even if Randy Edsall leaves, I am confident we can get a top notch program to Storrs cause we pay and we pay well. CT does not have a ton of FB talent, but we are building a great pipeline from NJ, PA and FLA.

I guess most CUSE fans have a hard time accepting the new kid on the block has a lot of potential. Large public schools will always get more support from people in the state than private ones. Sorry SU and BC.

I've tried to stay out of this, both on the rival boards and here, but I have to ask - do you realize the irony in the above two statements?

I'm sure as a fan this is certainly your dream but you must also be aware of the alternative as well. Like maybe 8 of the next 10 years with records of 4-8, 5-7, 6-6, 7-5 and such that actually blunt the love affair the state of Connecticut is having with the team now - that will make all of the above unlikely?

Quote:  Look, UCONN is putting a ton of investment into the FB program and our recruiting is getting better and better every single year. Too simplistic. First, states all over the country are asking their state colleges to have athletic departments that are self-sufficient and rely less on the state to bail them out in the college 'arms race'. UConn is fortunate at the moment that the state is fairly affluent and is presently willing to poor the $$$ into its athletics program. This is hardly the norm and if you think it is, you are mistaken.

Second, two of the four most successful college football programs of all-time are private institutions - ND and USC - and a third, Miami, will probably join them if they experience any success whatsoever in the ACC comparable to what FSU enjoyed in the 90s (meaning another two NCs over the next ten years to get them to a total of 7).

There's a lot more to the private vs. public argument with both having their strengths and weaknesses - but I stop for now since this is already a rather lengthy post and that is not the topic of this thread.

Bringing this back more to topic - I think a decent rivalry can develop between SU and UConn that can help strengthen the BE and its existing ones between Pitt and the Eers and the Cards and the Bearcats.

But rivalries alone will not save the BE. SU, Pitt and WVU are going to have to become consistent winning programs, Louisville is going to have to remain a consistent winner while playing a now harder schedule and UConn, Rutgers, Cincinnati, and South Florida are going to all have to step it up to the next level.

Let's begin by winning the majority of our OOC games against BCS opponents.

Cheers,
Neil

When Uconn starts to live up to this socalled potential, then we will get worried. Until then, we are still #3 in the Northeast behind ND and Penn St.
