It depends. If the Big East sends an 12-0 Top 3 or 5 team to the BCS and the 2nd place team is 11-1 and ranked in the BCS Top 6 then they would have to take two teams from the conference.
They would not necessarily need to take 2 BE teams even if they ranked that high. California, ranked 5th last year did not go bcs. Neither did Georgia at number 7. CAL was 10-1 prior to the bowl game.

We only play 11 games before the bowls this year. Even if we had an 11-0 and a 10-1, there is a chance we could be shut out for that second team.

Adding to the problem is that the B10 schedule has each team missing 2 conference members, which could produce 2 teams with very good records. Purdue, e.g. , does not face MICH OR OH ST. The B10 might also have an 11-0 and 10-1. Actually, they could have two undefeated teams.

I don't look for any UTAH's (non-bcs conferences) to up and bite us this year, but the potential is always there that they could take a spot. If FRESNO STATE beats Oregon and upsets SO CAL, they could be undefeated and in position to make a case. BOISE ST plays GEORGIA AND OREGON ST their first 2 games. An undefeated slate would put them in position also. Keep in mind that UTAH put itself in position by beating 2 bcs-conf teams at the start of last season.

The other wild card is NOTRE DAME. Who really knows what they'll do next year?

But the Cal situation was a rare one. More often then not a Top 6 team is going to go to a BCS bowl. Also keep in mind, people say that the Big East will likely never have 2 teams finish in the Top 4, I doubt ANY conference will have 2 teams finish in the Top 4 except in the rarest of rare situations.

animus Wrote:back to the original topic @ hand. if the pac 10 and big east don't have a new years day bowl. then why not move the insight to new years day and have that for the big east and pac 10 # 2's since that is a matchup of both conferences anyways if the big east loses the gator which is very probable right now.
That's actually a good idea. I think the reason it hasn't been seriously considered before is because the Big East had the Gator Bowl. Now with the Gator Bowl likely leaving the Insight.com should bump its payout to around 1.7 to 2 million dollars and petition to move to New Year's. I think that would be perfect, even if it is a West Coast bowl. Heck, it works for the Big Ten and Pac-10 with the Rose Bowl, it would be a poor man's Rose Bowl as far as being a showcase of the Pac-10 and Big East. I think it would be perfect, and the Champ Bowl being the #3 bowl.

give it like a 3pm start and whatnot. possibly nbc or cbs. i dunno. i think it could work. does the insight have the funding for that kind of payout if it would happen. and what bout the liberty being moved to new years day. its one of the most prestigous bowls somehow lost in the new day. why not bring back its prestige.

That's a good question about whether or not the Insight.com would have that kind of funding. It plays in the shadow of the Fiesta Bowl and it would be a perfect way for it to get some of its own spotlight by picking up the Big East and Pac-10's #2 or #3 teams and being a New Year's Bowl. It's sponsored by a major company that should be able to bump up the payout. It was run by the people who ran the Fiesta Bowl for awhile I believe. I think it would be a perfect New Year's Bowl. The Liberty Bowl being a New Year's Bowl would be interesting. C-USA has long been considered the 7th conference, the BCS cousin, and MWC considered a serious player. Those two playing in a New Year's Bowl would help. But Insight being a New Year's Bowl, I wonder what kind of hurdles have to be overcome for that to happen. Moving that Bowl to New Year's and bumping the payout to around 1.7 to 2 million dollars would add prestige to the Big East, Pac-10 and the bowl itself.

no doubt. big east #2 vs mwc #1 in the liberty on new years day would be quit appealing as well. would help boast mwc for that 7th auto bid.

The thing is though, the Liberty Bowl is basically a C-USA bowl. I wouldn't have any problem at all having the Big East's #2 team playing the C-USA champ on New Year's. That's not going to happen though, the Liberty Bowl seems to be upset with the Big East or something, probably over passing Memphis, who knows. That's why the Insight Bowl idea you brought up is so intriguing. It's absolutely perfect for the Big East AND Pac-10. There's an already made relationship between the conferences, and with the Big East's New Year's Bowl likely gone it allows two BCS conferences who are already allies to get a New Year's Bowl. Insight could be a poor man's Rose Bowl or Fiesta Bowl. It adds prestige for everyone!

When does that 5th bcs bowl game come into existence? I don't think it's this year.

Figuring on only 4 bcs bowls with 8 teams, I think my way-too-early predictions would be these:

P10: USC
B12; TX, OK
SEC: TN
B10: MI, IA
ACC: VT
BE: LOU

Since the B12, SEC, and B10 have more votes than anyone else, the liklihood of a second team from a conference is more in their favor, even if they are revealing their final votes. If the acc picks up an extra vote this year, their chances of getting a 2nd team will be enhanced.

Regardless, I don't think the BE or the P10 will have the leverage to get in a second team.

Good point JIM. I believe this year is the last year of the BCS makeup and then the new deal kicks in for the 2006 season.
