RE: OT- Video Games
In my opinion N64 is a landmark in video game development.

Everything said previously about Goldeneye is certainly true. I definitely played the hell out of that game both in single player and multiplayer. One of the best games of my lifetime.

Having said that, the game that I will always remember N64 for, and I think one of the greatest, most revolutionary, most ahead of it's time games of all time has to be Mario 64. That was a game changer, the depth, the gameplay, the innovation. The game absolutely blew my mind. I think the argument can be made that it was the best N64 game and it was a launch title. How many consoles can that be said about?

The N64 released in Japan about three months before it did in the States. My 13th birthday just happened to fall in that time period and the local video game rental place just up the street from my house rented Japanese N64's until the American release. So for my thirteenth birthday I had my closest friends over and we played Mario 64 in Japanese for at least twelve straight hours, not understanding a word of instruction or dialogue, but still having a blast. By far one of the nerdiest moments of my life as well as one of the most fun birthdays of my childhood.

RE: OT- Video Games
the N64 in general was amazing. my first console I owned was the Super NES, which got me completely addicted to video games. I played the hell out of the original NES at my uncle's house, but never actually owned one. Jaws, Ninja Turtles, Mario (1,2,3), Duck Tails, etc etc etc. God I love playing video games.

Goldeneye was an eye opener, the precursor to ALL FPS shooters IMO. changed the world as far as video games were concerned. Mario 64 WAS amazing and I played the hell out of it, but Goldeneye changed the way I looked at video games.

See I feel that Goldeneye changed the way I looked at FPS and Mario 64 changed the way I looked at video games in general.

Also I feel that Goldeneye, while a great game and not to diminish that fact at all, just took the groundwork laid by Wolfenstein, Doom and Duke Nukem, improved it exponentially and really set the genre in motion by bringing it to the console. I had played some Wolfenstein, Doom, and Duke Nukem on PC so I was familiar with the genre, but Goldeneye was what originally hooked me to it.

Having said all of that, there were things in Mario 64 that had never really been seen or attempted in any game in any genre. It was the first real full three dimensional world game, having only really seen three dimensions in limited use in fighting games. If you think about the worlds you can explore in games like GTA, Red Dead, Elder Scrolls etc. that's what Mario 64 did in it's time. It broke through the boundaries of sidescrolling adventure games and could probably be argued as the precursor to free roam way ahead of it's time.

While im a avid computer gamer we also have a Wii that the family plays on. I thnk for Xmas this year were gonna invest in a PS3 over a 360 because of the blu ray player.

the blu ray player is the only thing keeping PS3 alive. Xbox 360 is a superior home entertainment system all around save that one thing.

RE: OT- Video Games
I disagree. The PS3 is catching up to Xbox360 in sales. The September 2011 report from both companies show the PS3 has sold 38.1 million units and the Xbox360 has sold 41.7 million units. Take into consideration that the Xbox360 released a full year before the PS3 and was far cheaper at launch. I say the PS3 is doing pretty darn good being behind by only 3.6 million units.

Both consoles have their ups and downs. The PS3 is a far superior machine in every way. However, the Xbox360 has a far superior online atmosphere/community.

I certainly wouldn't mind playing online for free. Though didn't it get hacked or something and was shut down for awhile?

RE: OT- Video Games
Nor was mine. Had no issues from the hack. Facebook got hacked recently too. It happens sometimes, regardless of the level of precaution.

I owned the original Nintendo way back in the mid 80's. Cartridges that you had to blow in and all. And the Duck Hunt gun. Saved my report card money up and bought my very own system. 10 years later, as a broke, new driver, I sold it and all the games I had for it for $20 freaking dollars. Wish I still had it so I could play it old school every so often (aside from the fact that it'd be worth a lot more now than that $20).
