New President and Athletics Finance
I reiterate, do the following numbers from the USA Today - NCAA College
Athletics Finance Database mean anything when discussing ETSU athletics? Will the new president take a look at ETSU's relative standing in the world of college athletics finance? Note: All the following randomly selected schools play FCS football except one, and this data is for 2009-10 showing athletic expenditures for that year.

1. Old Dominion $29,048,014.00
2. James Madison $28,991,789.00
3. Georgia State $17,195,830.00
4. App State $16,185,310.00
5. UTC $13,115,269.00
6. Eastern Kentucky $12,309,887.00
7. Youngstown St $11,842,751.00
8. Citadel $11,616,308.00
9. ETSU $10,375,506.00
10. Ga Southern $10,174,594.00 #1 FCS Football Team
11. Jacksonville St $10,141,416.00
12. VMI $9,834,258.00
13. Tenn Tech $9,488,436.00
14. Tenn Martin $8,808,664.00
15. Southeastern La $8,682,579.00
16. Western Carolina $8,495,436.00
17. McNeese St $7,890,850.00
18. Austin Peay $7,203,428.00

Who knew? Answer, Dave Mullins. He always says, "show me the money" when football is mentioned. I say to Dave, show me the itemized outlays.

RE: New President and Athletics Finance
Every news release that I read with relation to the presidential interviews and the topic of football, there is a standard description for the dropping of football in 2003 - IT WAS LOSING MONEY. That's all that's ever stated with no additional explanation or analysis. It was losing money, period. Of course it was losing money if that implies that it was supposed to be making money or breaking even, just like all the other NCAA FCS programs in the country. It leaves the impression that ETSU was the only football program in America that was not paying its own way. And, many continue to believe this to be true. It leaves the assumption that the other sports at ETSU are somehow not losing money. The ETSU athletic department makes one of the most outrageous claims in all of college athletics finance, that they have had a "balanced operational budget" every year since 2003! That would be a "balanced operational budget" that is subsidized to the tune of 85% by student fees and tuition. That would be a "balanced operational budget" that is LARGER than the athletic budget of the number 1 FCS football school in America - Georgia Southern.

100% correct.

RE: New President and Athletics Finance
I wonder if anyone on here has some inside knowledge about how the process is going this weekend. I would expect that there are a lot of "back channel" goings on that we do not know about. Also our area legislators are actively involed and I think this is where we have an advantage. Our local elected representatives are strongly in favor if bringing back football and want to work with the next president to get it accomplished ASAP. I have learned everything I could about the three candidates but now I am relying on our officials to make sure the right person is hired. This is an exciting time for fans of ETSU.

There of course is "back channel" discussion going on, but I don't know any details. I will say (again) though, the that letter our legislators wrote, and had published, asking Manahan to apply made them look foolish then, and even much more so now. Honestly, their influence is probably diminished because of that, and they're not going to be calling the shots on this at all. They *may* have Haslam's ear a bit, but that's about it. From what I hear, the chancellor is trying to be very fair and open-minded, and is going to be listening to all the search committee members' feedback. If he has a pick in mind, he's keeping that close to his vest.
