Capital One Bowl, ABC move closer to a new agreement
By Alan Schmadtke
Sentinel Staff Writer

June 9, 2005

Orlando's New Year's Day bowl appears on its way to staying on ABC -- and staying there with no competition from other Big Ten or Southeastern Conference teams.

Several hours of meetings in New York on Wednesday left Florida Citrus Sports Executive Director Tom Mickle feeling upbeat about the future of the Capital One Bowl, though a formal agreement might not come for a couple more weeks.

"Very productive. We worked through a lot of issues," said Mickle, who was accompanied by FCSports' counsel, Rich Fildes; executive committee member Bill Dymond; President George Nahas and Assistant Executive Director Steve Hogan.

"I think we're both on the same page. We both want to keep the Capital One as the best bowl game outside the BCS."

Wednesday was the first time ABC put dollar figures to FCSports' proposed Jan. 1 lineups, most of which centered on a Big Ten runner-up vs. an SEC non-champion.

Mickle declined to discuss any financial terms.

Both the network and the bowl organizer agreed to keep intact an exclusive window that prevents other bowl games with SEC or Big Ten teams in them from being played at the same time as the Capital One.

ABC Senior Vice President for Programming Loren Matthews said clause was valuable to both the bowl and the network.

A final agreement is several more meetings away, Matthews and Mickle said.

"This is the next agreement we want to get in place," Matthews said. "I would hope we could
move with alacrity on this."

Interesting...If memory serves the other league that the Gator was talking to was the Big 12. Would you rather have the Big 12 #4 or #5 or the BE #2 or Notre Dame? It seems the Gator Bowl has always been anti BE....so it wouldn't suprise me if the Gator moved out of new yrs day or hooked on with the Big 12 ....but I would certainly question if that sort of move would be the correct one

Yep, with 10 teams going to BCS Bowl games starting in 2006, you can count on the Big 12 getting two in most of the time. Which means #3 will be going to the Cotton and #4 will be going to the Pacific Holiday Bowl.

So now the Gator is in a spot. Is the Big 12 #4 or #5 teams going to travel to Jacksonville and/or generate more interest than the BE #2/ND team?

Over the past three years, B12 #4 (in terms of BCS rankings) has been Texas Tech, Nebraska, and Colorado. B12 #5 has been Oklahoma State all three years.

Of those teams only Nebraska clearly has more appeal than BE #2, but not as much appeal as ND. To get up to the B12 #3 or #4 the Gator is going to have pony up more than the Holiday which already pays out a million more. So any increase by the Gator should be able to be matched by the Holiday.

Of course the only downside to keeping the Gator is that it is another bowl match-up with the ACC.

Should be an interesting couple of weeks.

Cheers,
Neil

it might be too late, their director hasn't been exactly shy about expressing his dislike for the big east. he'd have to eat some humble pie to back track and keep the big east, which i don't see him doing and no way mike t gives them unfettered access to nd. i'd rather align with a bowl that wants us rather than one that felt like they were forced to settle. as long as we have a higher paying florida bowl, be it the champs or gator, along with the bcs game then we should be okay as far as bowls are concerned. the gator can rot with ok state every year, imo, they deserve it with the comments they've made.

-- amen....the nice thing about all this is the Champs bowl does not seem to want unfettered access to ND...and its payout will be about the same as the Gator...I could care less if our #2 plays on Dec 29 (or whenever the Champs bowl will be played)
or Jan 1
