ACCIAC: Is this a big deal or is it merely window dressing?
I'm interested in hearing more about how this institution really fits into the picture for the ACC. In the B1G, their CIC is considered a huge deal. To what extent the CIC is an effective institution is debatable IMO. I know the IAC began in 1999 - so it's still a new organization. Is this organization part of the ACC long term strategic plan to rival the B1G wrt to academic collaboration?

I think it was meant to be a start, but for the most part it is window dressing at the moment. But don't be surprised if the ACC doesn't come up with something broader, but similar in concept to the BiG's CIC within the next 5-10 years.
Cheers,
Neil

IIRC, I believe there was an article (or several posters who were not idiots: )) who mentioned that the ACC did plan on expanding their academic consortium to be the equivalent of the B1G's CIC.
I think it is a great idea - both in current form and going down the road.
Pitt should make a substantial contribution to this organization.
HAIL TO PITT!

I agree, because it could be a very effective way to cement relationships within the conference. I think the CIC played a prominent role in helping the B1G maintain membership stability for all of these years. The CIC is an old organization, and I don't think it's an accident that a large percentage of large research dollar public universities are also B1G members.
Realistically, we know that one size does not fit all and with a significant percentage of smaller private schools, the ACCIAC mission may not be the exact same mission of the CIC. It may want to push undergrad excellence a little harder than what the CIC appears to do. But I would not squelch the idea that a private school can also become a significant research power. It will be interesting to see how everything unfolds over the next few years.

One benefit of the CIC is that student sof any member university can take graudate classes at a fellow CIC university without the formalities of registration/transfer of credits/etc. This allows a student to tailor his degree as he sees fit (within parameters). It also exposes more grads to cross disciplines and other sciences.
Another benefit is that specialized euquipment and facilities may be at one location while the grad student is at another. He may either go to the 2nd location, have others at the second location do the "work" or have teh equipment loaned to his home location.
And a third benefit is that when one school bids on a project, they can utilize the equipment, facilities and personnel at another member facility to enhance the bid and their overall ability to perfomr the project.
Virtually, if not literally, every school in the B1G earns more money from research than Texas does in sports!
