COUGARS TAKE ON TWO MORE RANKED CONFERENCE TEAMS:
For the second consecutive week, the Washington State volleyball team will play two ranked Pacific-10 Conference teams...the WSU Homecoming Week competition begins Thursday night when the Cougs (11-2, 2-2 tied for 5th in Pac-10) host #17 Arizona (6-5, 1-2 - 8th)...Friday night #24 Arizona State (6-2, 2-1 - tied 3rd) comes to Bohler Gym...both matches begin at 7 p.m. PT.

COUGS IN THE NATIONAL POLLS:
After three weeks of moving up in the USA Today/AVCA Coaches Top 25 Poll, WSU dropped one place to 19th this week...USC maintained its number one ranking...other Pac-10 members in the poll include #4 Stanford, #13 UCLA, #17 Arizona and #24 Arizona State...also receiving votes, California (#29) and Washington (#33)...Washington State is 22nd in the Volleyball Magazine Top 20 poll.

BEATIN' 'EM IN BOHLER GYM - ADVANTAGE COUGARS:
During the last nine seasons (1991-1997, 2000-02) WSU has used Bohler Gym as its home court, the Cougars racked up a 182-77 record (.703), averaged 22 wins per season, and made nine post season appearances...average attendance for this year's home matches is 986 fans (25th nationally)...average attendance to date for Pac-10 home matches is 1,658 fans.

MISS "T' ASAULTING COUGAR VOLLEYBALL RECORDS:
Senior LaToya Harris needs only 14 digs to become just the third Cougar in school history to reach both 1,000 kills and digs in a career...Harris will join Keren Oigman (1,054 kills, 1,070 digs) and Shannon Wyckoff (1,051 kills, 1,254 digs), who both played for Cougar coach Cindy Fredrick from 1994-97...Harris, the four-year starter and two-time first team All-Pac-10) is currently fourth in Washington State University career kills (1238) and aces (120), and sixth in digs (986).

JAMTAAS SCOOPING UP AND MOVING UP:
Though this is the first season for the Libero position, WSU senior Kortney Jamtaas has spent a career diggin' with the best of them in the Cougars' back row...with 30 digs last weekend, Jamtaas moved into 10th on the WSU all-time career digs standings with 912 digs...she leads the Pac-10 in digs per game with 4.03 dpg.

WSU VOLLEYBALL'S ABC CAMPAIGN:
Cougar volleyball and the Breast Cancer Support Group of the Palouse have joined together as Bosom Buddies for the Attacking Breast Cancer (ABC) Pledge Drive...October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and the Cougar players will be collecting monetary pledges for each attack which results in a kill (and a point) for WSU during the eight matches this month...anyone interested in donating may contact the WSU volleyball office at 509-335-0277.

COUGAR COACHING STAFF:
Head coach Cindy Fredrick is coaching her 14th season on the Palouse...her record at WSU is 256-166 (.607) while her overall collegiate record is 342-226 (.602) in 18 years...her Pac-10 record is 117-121 (.492) in 13 years...assistant coaches are her husband, Dr. Mashallah Farokhmanesh (14th year), and former Cougar standout, Jennifer Stinson Greeny (third year).

STREAK STOPPED IN LA:
The Cougars' win streak was stopped at 11 match with losses at #1 USC and #17 UCLA last weekend...also halted was the school record 32 consecutive games won.

#17 ARIZONA (1-2, 6-5) - The Wildcats losses have come against Louisville, #2 Nebraska, #14 Pepperdine, #1 USC and Arizona State...the loss at ASU dropped the Wildcats from 12th to 17th in the poll...Arizona was a final four team in 2001...freshman Kim Glass (6-2, MB/OH) leads the team with 4.43 kpg (4th Pac-10), 5.38 ppg (3rd Pac-10), 0.51 sapg (6th Pac-10) and .301 hpct....Lisa Rutledge (6-2, Sr. OH) adds 3.59 kpg (10th Pac-10) and 4.26 ppg (10th Pac-10)...Bre Ladd (6-1, Fr. Opp) averages 1.19 bpg (6th Pac-10)...coach Dave Rubio (203-102, 11 years at Arizona - 323-167, 18 years career)...Arizona leads the series with WSU 24-9 and has a 24-8 advantage in Pac-10 play...the Wildcats have an 11-5 lead when playing in Pullman and has won the last eight matches against the Cougs...WSU's last win was in 1997 at Bohler Gym.

#24 ARIZONA STATE (2-1, 6-2 pending 10/3 match at Washington) - The Sun Devils jumped into the national poll this week (first time since 1995) after a stunning sweep of neighbor #12 Arizona...the score of the third game, 42-40, may be the top numbers since the collegiate game adopted the 30-point scoring format two seasons ago...ASU losses have come at South Carolina and against #1 USC...wins against ranked teams are #13 Pacific, #11 UCLA and #12 Arizona...the Sun Devils are led by the current Pac-10 Player of the Week, Brazilian Juliana Escobar (5-11, Jr. OH)...Escobar averages 4.66 kpg (3rd Pac-10), 5.72 ppg (3rd Pac-10) and 0.84 sapg (2nd Pac-10)...coach Patty Snyder-Park is in her 14th and final season at ASU (207-171)...Arizona leads the series with WSU 18-15 overall and 17-15 in Pac-10 match-ups...the Cougars have won the last two meetings...the series is tied in Pullman at eight wins each.

MORE NUMBERS FOR YOUR NOGGIN:
In Pac-10 team stat standings, WSU leads both Arizona and Arizona State in all categories but one...Arizona is third in blocking while the Cougars are seventh...NATIONALLY, thru 9/22 matches, Brenn Larson was 15th in assists, Adrian Hankoff was 29th in aces...WSU was fourth in kills per game, 17th in hitting percentage, and 12th in assists.

LIVIN' LIBERO LOCO:
Last year, collegiate volleyball fans were force-fed rally scoring to 30 points and still managed to love the game...this season the newest twist to the competitive rules is the libero (LEE-bah-ro) position, played for several years in the international volleyball arena...the libero is a defensive specialist with restrictions...she wears a different colored jersey from her teammates and can be seen running into the game without the formal substitution ceremony or counting as one of the 12 subs allowed per team in a game...the libero may only play in the back row and may not serve or attack, only dig, dig, dig (pass)...she may only be replaced by the same player she replaced...WSU senior Kortney Jamtaas played the position during the spring practice tournaments and in the eight European contests the Cougars played in August...Jamtaas loves the fast-paced action and it obviously suits her well as she leads the conference in digs with a 4.03 dpg average.

NATIONAL ATTENDANCE RANKINGS:
The Cougars drew crowds of 1,872 (OSU) and 1,445 (UO) two weeks ago to move into the top 25 in the national attendance rankings with an average home attendance of 986 (25th) fans (5 home matches)...the average for the Pac-10 matches is 1,658 fans...Hawai'i leads the nation with an average of 7,197 fans (11 home matches)...Arizona is the top Pac-10 school with 1,900 (5 matches).

SERVING ON THE COURT AND IN THE COMMUNITY:
The Washington State volleyball team had another successful September clothing drive...using the theme, Bring your gently used clothes and a pair of new hose, women donated professional clothing for use by area low-income women entering or re-entering the work force...the donated clothes and hose were taken to the Pullman Community Action Center and donors received free admission to the Sept. 20 or 21, Cougar volleyball matches at Bohler Gym.
