In my first year coaching, I used to keep the chart for the defense, marking down our calls on each play to be used for film breakdown. Each sheet had 12 slots and I got five sheets. I remember asking the DC "What if I run out of sheets during the game?" He said, "If they run over 60 plays against us, just write "Asses Kicked" at the bottom of the 5th page and forget about it."

Every time you ask those D-linemen to put their hand on the ground, they get worn out. If they have to do it 12 times in a row about 30 seconds apart, they'll be exhausted.

If the Huskies really wanted to, they could chew up* more clock between plays instead of running hurry-up.

Also, when Jordon Lynch rips off another 60 yard run, or Martel Moore catches another 60 yard bomb, you will not hear me complain about how little time that took off the clock.

Possessing the ball is nice. Doing something with it is even better.

*How's that for a dog analogy?

We've got to do something about that 03-nerner How 'bout we use a whole bunch of DL so they don't get too tired?

RE: NIU's time of possession
Coach Doeren actually addressed this in his weekly press conference. If you don't want to read them all (some pretty interesting stuff), the speed of the offense is discussed about 3/4 of the way through his Q&A session.

RE: NIU's time of possession
Curiousity was killing me. So, through 9 games, have run 641 plays (71/game) and have possessed the ball for 14,157 seconds. Therefore, we average a play every 22 seconds. Will be interesting now watching the play clock during games to see if our offense is running plays above, below or right at our average so far.

So amazing to me that over this 17-1 stretch, only in 3 of those 18 games did the Huskies not break the 30 point mark, and two of those three games were vs the MAC (EMU, Ohio, and Iowa). Now that is consistency

My key to NIU's game this weekend is for them to at least tie the TOPB (Time of possession batter, for those that don't know)

It would be nice to see them up around the 30 minute mark so that the defense could get drinks of water or red or blue gatorade

I know you only have 20 posts, and so you're classified as a "water engineer", but you care way too much about the hydration of our defense.

The thing about rest for the Defense is overblown. D-Linemen are the ones most likely to wear down and we rotate 8. Not a concern, IMO.

If our defense didnt get tired in Muncie, they never will!

Time of possession is an irrelevant stat in today's fast-paced offenses. # of plays is a more important

RE: NIU's time of possession
There seems to be a fairly strong overall trend with this team, not necessarily getting better as the game goes on, but getting better as each half goes on.

Our worst point differential quarters are 1st and 3rd and our best are 2nd and 4th

It is an irrlevant stat if you run a fast paced offense. The other extreme is a ball control offense that Army employs and TOP is critical to the success of that team. TOP is still a useful stat, and I would guess that the majority of teams in the top 25 still possess the ball longer than their opponents. (I'm curious to know if that is true, but I'm not going to look it up.)

In this week's Tues press conference Dave Doeren said that TOP came up as a discussion amongst the coaching staff. The defensive coaches told the offensive coaches not to worry about it, they would prefer to see them score as many points as possible. The NIU offense executes the "fast pace" better than any other team that I have seen and it is a huge reason why they score so many points.

have to agree here.......we're NOT a grind it out offense, we don't run the triple option.....what are we? a big play offense that gets stronger as the game moves along, we have some stud WR's and you play to your strong points.......ENJOY THE RIDE!!

Love the way my Huskies are playing today!!!!!!

Only problem is that our defense is looking tired. The offense can't let them be on the field this long.

EMU is killing us in TOP right now 21 minutes to 15.

If this trend continues NIU may be in trouble heading into the 4th quarter. Look for EMU to make a big push soon
