Boston Bruins owner may help finance DI hockey at Buffalo

Buffalo may join CCHA with Bowling Green, Canisius, Mercyhurst, Niagara, Robert Morris

And the new uniforms

I know NIU has a club team that plays their home games out of town.

However, i don't see NIU adding the sport (unless we could get an NHL franchise to fund us as well). We don't have the money nor a place to play on campus. Then we would also have to add another women's sport (Lacrosse?) for Title IX purposes.

Or enroll fewer women overall.

Would someone ask Major Donor if he knows any other officers who would like to invest in collegiate athletics?

Unfortunately, my friend, that is NOT how NIU is currently measuring Title IX compliance.

UB doesn't have a major donor. They've been trying to raise money for an indoor practice field for what seems like five years now.

Donors give to projects they want to.

Seriously doubt a Boston Bruins owner would be interested in sponsoring an indoor practice field.

RE: Major Donor to Fund Buffalo DI Hockey?
How about this for the New, Revised CCHA:

Bowling Green
Mercyhurst
Robert Morris
Canisius
Niagara
Buffalo
UAH
Liberty (have desired varsity hockey for a while, no conference slots available, strongly supports their multiple club teams)
Lindenwood (St. Charles, MO school that just started a women's DI team, top rated ACHA men's club team)

Rather enroll fewer men and enroll more women!

Its a Catch 22!
Enroll fewer women = greater male to female ratio = unhappy dating environment = more males opting to go to other universities = the evening out of male to female ratio = the need to enroll fewer women = greater male to female ratio = unhappy dating environment = more males opting to go to other universities = well..........you get the point.

Well, when you consider the trends are that at most Universities now, more females are already enrolled than males in undergrad studies.........

Bowling Green newspaper opinion piece strongly urging that the Falcons go to the WCHA, rather than associate with AHA teams in a new CCHA.

The teams invited from the AHA would no longer be 12 scholarship teams, but 18. Moreover, much of what will remain in Atlantic Hockey doesn't even offer scholarships, as Bowling Green would essentially be playing the cream of the AHA, and those schools would only get better.

Bowling Green should initially dominate in a new CCHA, which wouldn't happen in the WCHA.

Travel would be expensive in the WCHA, and the cities of the WCHA would offer few if any alumni the chance to watch the team nor are those cities where BGSU recruits students. Furthermore, the schools don't really help BGSU's academic reputation (MTU and UAF excepted).

Watch for the WCHA adding schools like Minnesota State-Moorhead, Minot State, and Simon Fraser (BC) in the next several years.

Its win-win-win with some risk for BGSU if it reconstructs a new CCHA.
Its lose-lose-win (the win part being that hockey program has stability) with little upside if BGSU goes to the WCHA.

Sad News on this front:

Quote:Delaware North Cos. Chairman Jeremy Jacobs, also known as the owner of the Stanley Cup-winning Boston Bruins, refuted reports that he would be willing to fund UB's climb into D-I hockey the way Sabres owner Terry Pegula did last year with Penn State. Pegula dropped $88 million for men's and women's programs and a new arena. "There's no truth to the rumors," Jacobs said through a spokeswoman.

This is from our AD yesterday...

Jeff Compher: ...at this time, there are no plans to add any additional sports at NIU.

Jeff Compher: ...we don't have any ice[arena] in DeKalb or the immediate area which would likely preclude that possibility. As stated above, we have no plans to change our sport line-up at this time.

That kind of sucks. Guess I'll definitely question the BG Sentinel-Tribune's report next time.

Like this opinion piece:

The new CCHA should shoot for these schools:

Bowling Green
Mercyhurst
Robert Morris
Canisius
Niagara
UAH
Liberty
Lindenwood

That was the "safe" choice.

Typical.
