Appalachian State University trustees voted today to follow a feasibility study committee's recommendation and seek to move the university's football team to the Football Bowl Subdivision, a university spokeswoman said.

The vote was 9-1, with board member Bradley Adcock casting the "no" vote. Three board members were absent.

The board adopted a resolution thanking the committee and asking the university's Executive Committee to work with Chancellor Ken Peacock and other administrators to evaluate opportunities to move to the Football Bowl Subdivision and bring a recommendation for action to the trustees.

Last month, the feasibility study committee recommended the move.

The board of trustees' meeting was held in Washington, D.C., where trustees toured ASU's entry in the Solar Decathlon.

The board is traveling back to North Carolina by bus. Adcock could not be immediately reached.

All of the Mountaineers' sports teams are at the Division I level, but the football program competes in the Football Championship Subdivision of Division I, which offers fewer scholarships than the Football Bowl Subdivision.

The football team has won three national championships over the past six years. G.A. Sywassink, who was both chairman of the study committee and a trustee who voted for the move, said the committee is convinced the football program can remain competitive if it goes to the Football Bowl Subdivision."

I'm all for it. add them and Tech and we have a nice 12 team, two division league.

No no no no no!!!!! They had one good win that they're known for. That's great. Awesome for them. I'm aware that App State is a great team in the FCS every year, but they couldn't compete in the FBS and lack the resources and market to be competitive long term. No FCS teams please. That's the last thing this conference needs. The FBS is overpopulated as it is. App State: Stay where you belong. You'll be better off and we'll be better off.

I'm sure people said similar things about Troy when we announced our decision to move up.

The Sun Belt does not need to extend any more charity to up-and-comers. If it continues to accept former I-AA'ers, it will never be taken seriously.

APP State Pros:

• Excellent FCS football program. If any FCS football program has a chance to increase the prestige of the Sunbelt then it is Appalachian State.
• ?
  

APP State Cons:

• No compelling reason to further divide revenues, bowl appearences, NCAA bids, etc.
• Bad geography that will make travel to and from Boone difficult for even the closest Sunbelt members and will make travel expensive for non revenue sports.
• Poor market size.
• ASU is not known for thier basketball or baseball and would probably not help in those sports.
• There is NO guarantee that good FCS will translate to good FBS.
  

I have a tremendous amount of respect for Appalachian State but the cons really do outweigh the pros.

App St may be a little down this year. They play Chattanooga who has former Tennessee QB BJ Coleman and a lot of people are picking an upset. Regardless, if App St wins #1 Ga Southern will be heading there in October in what is sure to be an epic battle in front of 32k+ after Ga Southern defeated them last year.

We have absolutely nothing to gain by adding anyone at the moment.

seriously if the sun belt is going to add any fcs on the east side, you have to look at ASU. They've got better fan support than any current Sun Belt program. They have just as good facilities, if not better than any realistic candidates you can name. IMO, they 'enhance' the conference better than latech or nmsu.

Given the current landscape of FBS football, I wonder if they already have a home. Saying we are moving up means nothing since you can not move up without a conference home. Maybe I am wrong.

I think they see that just want to be ready in case a slot opens up. They don't want red tape to stand in the way of what could be thier last opportunity for a while.

I'm all for it. Would they dominate? No. However, they could potentially be a bowl team and get us closer to having a championship game. We need two more teams round robin is the worst idea ever for the Sun Belt. It's going to give us 0 chance of ever making a BCS bowl because you play 9 Sun Belt teams every year.

I just have no idea why any Sun Belt fan would want Appy. I really don't.
Lets see..they have a big win once upon a time and very good fcs football.
They bring NO TV sets to help with a better contract.
They are located in in the middle, albeit beautiful, middle of nowhere. A great winter trip for your BB teams.
Just say no!

Before you say it I know USA is just entering our transition too but......
We have a TV market.
We have an airport 5 miles from campus
We have I-10 passing thru and I-65 beginning here.
AND we are lucky to be members of an existing FBS conference
