My thoughts on the death penalty are that it stems from our cultures fear of death, like it's such a terrible thing and we're sending a guy to somewhere so scary/bad that it's the ultimate deterrent and punishment.

Guess what? No one gets out alive. We all go there.

I think a tough incarceration and reinforcement of that image to the community from time to time would be more of a deterrent (if any of this is a deterrent, that's a different discussion). I believe it's definitely a harsher penalty if the guy is guilty, to keep him alive and take their freedoms.

Killing them is the easy way out, and we're all just passing through. This guy could have waited ten more years and either proven guilty or exhonerated (please, no cost discussions, that's a load of crap), that would have been a much more acceptable outcome either way. IMHO of course.

We ought to serve them three square meals a day, a warm dry bed, give them a TV set, allow internet surfing, provide all the books, magazines and newspapers they want AND allow unlimited sexual intercourse.

This ought to be a deterent.

Provide them multiple internet gateways so that they can use different id's and not get caught on web boards, you name it, it'd be great.

I don't know if the guy was guilty or not , I also don't believe in the death penalty. Having said that, from what I have read his attorneys had more than a few opportunities to demonstrate his innocence in various venues. Plus, it is incontrovertible that he was one of two people pistol whipping a homeless man. Did he kill him? Who knows? At the very least wasn't likely a real nice guy.

Family friend is a guard at that prison at Kinross. They had a choice between the three escapees.
