Oh the backlash from the UofM/MSU fan base on this one... It's hilarious how any attempt to discredit their superiority in all things collegiate brings em out in force. I for one applaud Couch. His point is valid, and I myself believe that there isnt a more "FIERCE" rivalry in the state by any means. Our respective fan bases may be smaller with than that of UofM/MSU but of the fan base in support of this game, there are by far a larger percentage that actually get physically heated during the week leading up to this one. That is FACT. We actually HATE each other... we hate each others acedemics, campus's, athletes, coaches, teams, teachers, etc... this is NOT just limited to the game itself... we hate each other's institution as a whole. You cannot say the same thing about the majority of MSU fans or UofM fans... period.

It is as predictable as a B1G team playing 8 home games and no true OOC road games. THEIR beat writers' homerism is OK but anybody who dares to point out that a rivalry between two schools with smaller fan bases and without a Wal Mart component is probably more heated must be vilified. In their minds, BIG schools = great rivalry. Big $$ = greatness. Big media coverage = a great program. Big crowds = the best rivalry.

A rivalry is not a rivalry unless both schools feel the same way. If one team has dominated the series, it is not a rivalry. Colorado tried for years to create a rivalry with Nebraska. It didn't work at all until CU started to win those games. Then, to those at CU it was a rivalry. Not to Nebraska, as they had dominated that series. A few losses didn't a rivalry make.

We put up with the fan arrogance of UM/MSU all year long. But kudos to Couch for baiting them. Well played, sir.

Just a thought that occurred to me yesterday. With all the comments on the column about how bad the UM/MSU slappies think MAC football is, they just witnessed MAC football at the big hole last weekend.

Stay with me here - the UM/ND game had 2 ex-MAC head coaches, elements of the spread, high scoring offenses and defenses that perhaps left much to be desired, etc. How many points were scored in the final 10 minutes? Think back to CMU/WMU and the 34-31 game at Waldo, where almost more points were scored in the final half of the 4th quarter than in the previous 3 quarters. The UM-ND game was MAC football with a few more better athletes thrown into the mix, like Denard. Denard would not be a QB in the MAC - he'd be a slotback receiver or something where he could use his wheels. His arm is not up to MAC standards for QBs.

Still, I loved watching the fish taking the bait. Graham just hit the "easy" button.

If Hoke had come in last year Dennard would not have started. Tatertot would have started (and should have), and he'd still be starting today. Odds are Dennard would be playing WR as we speak.
