What about Penn State? I think they won one in the late 80s.

They were good before they joined the Big Ten. Lost their competitive edge when they joined the Big Ten. They used to own the Eastern Seaboard in recruiting. Now no one wants to go there as the closest away game is probably at OSU.

This could be another answer as to why VT made such a leap.

Penn State 1986 I believe. It was they year they beat Miami in the Fiesta Bowl. Notre Dame won in 1988, but I don't really consider ND as a northeastern team. They never played for the Lambert Trophy.

I'm not sure the lambert trophy defines nort eastern football. Notre Dame has a long history with the old eastern football indys.

Penn St. in 86 would be the last time. Last time I checked suburban Chicago wasn't considered to be in the Northeast.

The Lamber Trophy was established in 1936 to recognize "supremacy in eastern college football".

That's BS. You can't include ND in the northeast. For goodness sake, they are in Indiana, the heartland of America, the midwest. No way can you say they are northeast. And people think it's a stretch to want to add Memphis and ECU.

They also have, arguably, the biggest fan base in the Midwest, so now they're a Northeast AND Midwest team?

ND has the biggest 'national' fanbase. PSU has the biggest fanbase in the northeast. It's almost double the fans that follow ND.

And yes, for others in this thread, the Lambert Trophy defines 'northeastern' teams. The last northeastern team to win the NC is Penn State in 1986.

Still believe their 1994 team was better than Nebraska's but the B12 was a better conference that year and with a win over Miami in the Orange Bowl, there was no way PSU was going to finish ahead of them in the final major polls.

Cheers,
Neil

Penn St. got screwed that year. If you remember they beat Ohio St. in Columbus like 63-14. When the next poll came out the Columbus AP writer DROPPED PSU down. If there was ever a year where there should have been a split National Champion, 1994 was it. BTW, the Columbus writer is one of the major reasons why I would take a computer over a human in the voting process any day of the week.

They chose to join the Big 10. They were tied to the Rose Bowl. They missed the chance to play for the national title. Can't say I feel too bad for them. They made a choice and that was the consequence.

In hindsight, joining the Big Ten was a very bad mistake on their part. I don't mind too much, however.

To win the Lambert Trophy you need to be located in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, or a New England state or play at least half of your games against a team that is also eligible or located in those states. If I'm not mistaken West Virginia and Navy are exceptions to the rule and treated as being located in those states because of their roles in Eastern Football. Cincy and USF are eligible this year because they play PSU, Pitt, RU, SU, UConn, WVU, and each other. Louisville is thus eligible because they play Cincy, USF, RU, SU, Pitt, WVU, and UConn.

The Automatically Eligible teams:
Buffalo, Army, Navy, West Virginia, Pitt, Penn State, Temple, Rutgers, Syracuse, Boston College, Connecticut
This year's eligible by schedule teams: Cincinnati, South Florida, Louisville
