The key to a good RPI for non-conference is not to play Top 5 teams so much, its to play games against teams in the 75-150 range as opposed to games against 250+ RPI. At least we should probably be following that somewhat since we'll very likely be playing Richmond and College of Charleston in the 2 finals of the tournaments we're hosting. I also hope we play Arkansas St & MTSU in the opening semis, and not Prairie View A&M & Florida Atlantic in the opening round. Ark St and MTSU both would have been okay on the RPI last year. We are just cutting our own throats if we choose to play PVA&M in the semis b/c they were in the RPI bottom 10 last year due to an impressive 5 win season.
Along with that, why the hell are we playing D-1 newcomer UC-Davis? Schedule someone closer and better such as an EKU again.

Whew,
I know I said we should play a weaker OOC schedule in basketball, but.........Denny Crum could still be winning 20+ every season with a schedule like this.

Bob Huggins is a master of that. We usually play teams ranked from #5 to #20, but Huggs also plays a LOT of teams favored to win the smaller conferences. Those end up adding up in RPI. We also play teams who will have decent RPIs, like Dayton, Valpo, Xavier, Richmond, Kent State, Miami-OH and Detroit. Team who will have decent RPIs because they will play solid, quality teams OOC and that will improve YOUR RPI and SOS.

I know that appears to be a weak ooc schedule but again...remember, we are in the Big East now and so we really don't have to have a tough ooc schedule.
At UC, playing in The Great Midwest, and to a lesser degree, CUSA, we had to make sure we played marquee teams in our ooc so each year when the new schedule came out, we were trained to automatically look over the ooc.......we have to unlearn this trait and just relax....our Big East schedule will be brutal every year and so the ooc takes a back seat now.
Welcome to a REAL conference!!!!

If I have read the reports correctly, the tourney on December 3-5 is a round-robin format. That means we will play ALL the other participants and thus not be able to avoid Prairie View A&M. Also, since many people believe the Florida Atlantic entry into the Billy Minardi Classic is part of the football deal, I'm gonna go out on a limb and say they will be our opening-round game. Sorry, guys, we're going to end up with a few RPI 200's on the schedule.

Akron is a dangerous game for Louisville. Looking at this schedule, Akron will be Louisville first real game. They will find out that the #2 team in the MAC is no Praire View. If Louisville looks ahead to Kentucky, Akron will win. Akron returns everybody from a top 50 team that got snubbed even by the NIT. Louisville is Akron's biggest chance to impress the selection commitee.

No offense to Akron, but we don't lose to those types of teams and if we do...panic will set in.

The year Michigan State won the national title they lost to Wright State. There were "mid-major" teams that gave Duke a run at Cameron last year. These games aren't gimmes anymore. Especially when you're playing a team from the MAC, a conference notorious for pulling off upsets.

One of Pitino's strong suits is not losing to teams his program is supposed to beat and he has no mercy. If Akron is within 10 points of us I'll eat a plate full of crow.

L-Yes with all due respect we did lose to Butler in the NCAAs. They were a very good team but they are a Mid Major as well.

It IS very rare, though. I can count on one hand the number of mid-major losses in the past 3 seasons (Butler, Houston?, Xavier?, TCU). Considering something like 10 games each year are from mid-major competition, we do pretty well against those guys.
