RE: Week 1 attendances
Some of it might depend on how CMU counts their attendance. They'll probably sell a lot of season tickets, in large part because of the MSU game.

I doubt they count "butts in seats" normally, because the WMU-CMU game last year was listed at 22k+ and being in the stands I'd say there were closer to 15k, sadly.

RE: Week 1 attendances
We can sit here and make excuses about the weather, tickets sold vs butts in seats, TV deals, OOC, the MAC, ESPN, and blah blah blah but the reality is that 105,001 football fans in Columbus paid a lot of money to watch their team host the Akron Zips last week.

The key to having high attendance is giving your fanbase a reason to come see the home team, not the visitor.

The last time I checked my math, Ball State's 40,224 attendance at its first home game of the season tops Temple's 32,638. MAC first week attendance leader is Ball State by far.

I didn't know that they played at home, i assumed it was on the road. I didn't know any MAC on site field could hold that many. Still BSU didn't draw well at all last year, throw in the rest of their games at sub-15k games and that average will drop severely.
They played in Indy.

That honestly isn't a home game tho. It's neutral I bet Indiana had as many or more fans. Toledo's game in 09 should not have been counted vs. OSU as home attendance. I'm not sure that is was, they weren't our fans and it wasn't t our place.

I guess most of Philly doesn't watch Comcast SportsNet then.

Student attendance at that game: Ball State 6,000, IU 2,500.

42-7 is a really good football game? Nevertheless, you would think in a city that size Temple should be able to pull in more people. Unfortunately Temple will be battling its perception as a bad team for a while.

It's not just that. Fact is, Philly is a pro football town, through and through.

It's going to take some time (and Bowl appearances) to make the necessary in-roads, but I think we'll get there. Student support is finally where it should be. We need the alumni and city support now.

Winning a MAC East title might be a start. Then follow it up with a MAC title...too far? Temple would also need to win their bowl games not just appear. It is tough to get into a good bowl game as the mac 3 or 4 team.

Away teams don't have too much of a reason to come to Toledo besides the game itself, and maybe being sort of close to a few schools in the MAC.

This is what surprises me about the lack of traveling fans when it comes to making trips out east to Philadelphia. The city has SO much more to offer other than the football game, museums, fantastic eating venues and if you're lucky..perhaps another sporting event (depending on the season). C'mon, this isn't DeKalb, Akron or Ypsilanti.

DeKalb is an hour drive west of Chicago on a weekend. You can stay in Chicago the night before and/or after and have just as many if not more options than you would get in Philly.
Most Philly residents would rather do any of the activities you listed above rather then attend a game in a more than half empty loaner of a stadium. I like to sit around and watch all of the urban rednecks in philly get parking tickets on Parking Wars. Maybe nobody wants to come to Philly because all Temple fans take themselves too seriously and have bad attitudes. Sit down relax (have a cheese steak) and enjoy Temple beating Akron today. Then get ready to watch the MAC east title "slip" away again with a few key losses to teams that actualy play quality FBS football

Ohio had 23,155 in its home opener in week 2. That is pretty much a sellout in Peden Stadium capacity 24,000. We got Marshall next week and should have another big crowd. Ohio has Ball State, Marshall, Temple, Kent State and Miami left at home. Should be a good year for attendance with that slate and the expected level of play from the Bobcats this season.

Marshall will be a sell out because it will be full of Turd fans, Ball State will sell well because its homecoming. The question mark will be the other 3- Kent State is early Oct so weathet should be good, if Bobcats come in undefeated that wil help. The final 2- Temple and Miami will be the best 2 games of the year, but a Nov. weeknight game time will probably supress turnout.

It looks like we could count on attendance numbers for the games that will be about the same as last year. In 2010, Wofford drew 22,800 for the opening game and in 2011 Gardner Webb drew 23,150.

So I would say as a safe bet here:

Marshall (24,000)
Kent State (20,000), last year Toledo was 19,800
HC-Ball State (22,000), last year HC-Akron was 21,700
Midweek-Temple (16,000), last year Midweek Buffalo was 15,000
Midweek-Miami (16,000), last year Midweek Buffalo was 15,000

Cat's probably average just over 20,000 for the season. If Ohio's undefeated it will bump the crowds up for the final 2 games some.
