WSU Invitational Cross Country Meet Saturday
Cougars host meet at WSU Golf Course.

Oct. 7, 2002

THIS WEEK: The Washington State University men's and women's cross country teams will be competing at home for the only time this year, at the WSU Invitational, held at the WSU golf course in Pullman...the women's 5,000 meter race begins at 10 a.m. with the men's 8,000 meter race to follow...teams from the University of Idaho, Boise State, Gonzaga, Eastern Washington, and University of Calgary are scheduled to compete at the WSU Invitational.

Cougar Head Coach Jason Drake says: "This is a low-key meet compared to what our last one was and what our next one will be but at home we definitely want to do well. We're in the middle of the hardest training phase of the year. They might be a little tired but I think they'll be able to run well.

"Our course is very, very tough; probably the hardest course I've ever seen. It will be extremely hard for us and it will be interesting to see how they battle on that course. Probably an advantage to us over other teams who come here and hopefully that will be case next year in the Pac-10 Championships.

"The course is very, very hilly. It's tough to hit a ball on it let alone have to run up it."

Coach Drake about the Cougar Women: "Ana Cabrera probably had her best day last meet so I look for her to look good again. Anna Blue is starting to train really well so she probably made some strides. Everyone has improved quite a bit in every competition we've been in. Molly Bull had an improvement last time so look for some good things from her. Julie Corbett was sick at the last meet and had to drop out but is looking like herself again.

"The Idaho women are the favorites. The are a very good team and they showed that when we competed at Idaho earlier in the year. Hopefully we can match-up a little better against them this time. It will be a good measuring stick for us to see if we're a little closer to Idaho."

Coach Drake about the Cougar Men: "The men are all training really hard right now. Danny Wolf, Mike Heidt and Mark Wicklander have really been looking good. Ian Johnson is still coming around and every week he looks better than he did in the past. Kyle Barker had been nursing his shins but he's been able to train unlike the last meet where he missed three weeks of training. He's not at the full training but is about 90 percent.

"Idaho has a couple of really good individuals. One of their guys, Jan Eitel, was second to Danny Wolf at the Idaho meet and then ran really well against Washington in Seattle. He'll be tough to beat."

NEXT WEEK: The Cougars travel to Terre Haute, Indiana, for the Pre-NCAA Invitational Meet, Sat., Oct. 19...racing begins at 9 a.m. Central Time.
