Can we please stop. NIU will not be in the Big 12. Sometimes it is funny to read these insane posts. NIU does not have the athletic budget to compete. We would need to double our current budget. If those donors are out there, why are they not contributing now.

Maybe it was due partly to the crushed expectations following the KU game and smack down at the much hyped and anticipated SF show down.

I think the whole Facebook thing was a lot more lighthearted (at least most on this board are treating it that way) than you're reading it to be.

i cannot see NIU competing in the big 12.

Only conference I think NIU would fit is BIG EAST!

every journey takes a single step. imagine if those responsible for NIU coming to DeKalb a 100+ years ago listened to the detractors saying "not realistic, not going to happen, the obstacles are insurmountable, we can never hope to have a college in DeKalb, Rockford is so much bigger and better"

is it a long shot? yes.
is it going to happen tomorrow? no.
does it hurt to dream? no.

The 2 Conferences that look "vulnerable" and therefore in need to expand are also on the fringe, geographically, to NIU (BE West border Louisville/Big 12 Northeast border ISU). Actually if you count TCU, NIU is already inside the BE "influence."

Big East. NIU can compete and be a top dog! Also Chicago has some big east for BBALL.

BIG 12 for one our school cant even afford to fly us to the Championship game

Also The big 12 is a passing conference. One thing NIU lacks is a Secondary who can guard the pass.

I think best bet for NIU is the MAC. We have a budget that fits. We have teams that have the potential to compete within the conference bette than the Big 12 or Big East. We have the crowd size that fits. And the MAC is pretty stable with teams similar to us and geographically more logical.

If NIU happens to get better and start winning MACCs and the budget increases to where we can build facilities and treat our programs like a BCS school would, then maybe we would consider moving to a bigger conference. After the MAC can't provide adequate competition and we have the fans behind Huskie athletics, then bring it up. We have a long ways to go.

However, if Texas stays in the big 12 AND shares tv revenue with the rest of the teams eg Big Ten...then the revenue can be used to upgrade your facilities...Plus for NIU is the closeness to the Chicago market
Con for NIU is the future of the Big 12 which may fall apart after this season leaving few teams that will be a draw for NIU home games

The donors are out there but don't care about second class MAC football. The Big 12 or any other conference won't happen until we dominate the MAC and become Boise Midwest.

Seriously, can you even begin to imagine competing week after week vrs teams like TX and Oklahoma in all sports in this or any decade?

Most teams in the Big12 don't compete with teams like Texas and Oklahoma. We'd be more like a mini Iowa State

No, I can't right now. But in the 90s NIU football couldn't imagine competing in the MAC then. Heck, for a while, they couldn't imagine winning a game. Look at us now. Friggin' progress.
