Bruins Head to Honolulu for Outrigger Soccer Classic
The No. 5 UCLA women's soccer team heads to Honolulu this week for matches with San Francisco and Hawai'i as part of the Outrigger Hotels & Resorts Soccer Classic at the University of Hawai'i. On Friday, Sept. 13, the Bruins will take on San Francisco at 7:00 p.m. (HST). On Sunday, UCLA will face host Hawai'i at 5:00 p.m. (HST). The Bruins are 4-0 all-time against San Francisco and lead the all-time series with Hawai'i, 3-0. The Hawai'i match will be broadcast on live TV in Honolulu.
UCLA Defeats Virginia, Falls to Penn State at UCLA Women's Cup
The Bruins got two goals from freshman forward Katie Rivera and two more from sophomore forward Kim Devine, including a golden goal in the 98th minute, to defeat No. 5 Virginia, 4-3 on Friday, Sept. 6. On Sunday, against No. 12 Penn State, Nittany Lion forward Christie Welsh broke a scoreless tie in the 107th minute in double-overtime, giving Penn State the upset victory. Ironically, it was unranked USC that took home the Women's Cup title, as the only team in the tournament without a loss. The Women of troy defeated Penn State, 1-0 on Friday and played Virginia to a scoreless tie on Sunday.
Pryce Returns to Lineup Following National Team Duties
Bruin defender Nandi Pryce was one of just two college players selected by U.S. National Team coach April Heinrichs to participate for a four-day camp this past weekend in Columbus, OH. The purpose of the camp was to determine which players would make the roster for a match against Scotland on Sunday, Sept. 8. Because Pryce was not selected to play in the Scotland match, she was able to get back to Los Angeles in time for the Bruins' second match of the Women's Cup against Penn State on Sunday.
Oakes Makes Much Anticipated UCLA Debut
Bruin newcomer Jill Oakes, who missed the San Diego match on Aug. 30 due to her commitments with the Under-19 U.S. National Team, made her UCLA debut against Virginia on Sept. 6, helping UCLA to a 4-3 overtime victory. Oakes, a midfielder out of West Hills, Calif., was the unanimous No. 1 recruit in the country this year after earning both the Gatorade Circle of Champions and Parade Magazine National Player of the Year awards. She has been invited to training camps with the Full U.S. Women's National Team and was ranked No. 1 by Soccer America in its recent list of the nation's top-25 recruits.
Bruins No. 5 in both NSCAA/adidas and Soccer America Polls
The Bruins fell three spots to No. 5 in the latest NSCAA/adidas National Poll released Monday. North Carolina, Stanford, Santa Clara and Texas comprise the top-four. UCLA is also ranked fifth in the latest Soccer America Poll after jumping two spots from No. 7.

Rivera Scheduled to Play in Hawai'i
Freshman forward Katie Rivera suffered a broken nose in the first half of UCLA's match against Penn State on Sept. 8, but is scheduled to play this weekend in Hawai'i. She will practice this week with a protective mask. Rivera, who leads the Bruins in scoring with seven points (3g, 1a), was spectacular in UCLA's first two matches prior to her injury. In her first collegiate game, she had a goal and an assist in a 6-0 rout of San Diego on Aug. 30. Against No. 5 Virginia on Sept. 6, she scored two more goals, helping the Bruins to a 4-3 overtime victory over the Cavaliers. Before arriving at UCLA, Rivera was widely considered one of the top recruits in the country as a member of the Under-18 U.S. National Team. She was ranked No. 21 on Soccer America's Top-25 recruiting list.
Greco Solid in Return to UCLA Lineup
Redshirt sophomore captain Lindsay Greco, who led the Bruins in scoring before being sidelined with an ACL injury just four matches into last season, was impressive in the season opener against San Diego on Aug. 30. In nearly 60 minutes of action, she recorded two shots and assisted on the first goal of the match. Most recently, she assisted on two goals in a 4-3 overtime victory over Virginia on Sept. 6. Prior to the injury last season, she was UCLA's most explosive player, recording 13 points on six goals and an assist in 2001.
Recruiting Class Living up to No. 2 Ranking
Although the season just began, UCLA's recruiting class is already beginning to show why it was ranked No. 2 in the nation by Soccer America. In the Bruins' 6-0 season opening victory over San Diego, the freshmen accounted for nine of UCLA's 15 total points. Iris Mora led the way with two goals, while Katie Rivera tallied a goal and an assist. Stacy Lindstrom also got on the board with a goal of her own in the 68th minute of play. This past weekend at the UCLA Women's Cup, Rivera and transfer Kim Devine each had a pair of goals in the 4-3 UCLA victory.
Bruins to Play Mexican National Team Sept. 28
For the first time ever UCLA will do battle with another country when the Full Mexican National Team comes to Drake Stadium for an exhibition on Saturday, Sept. 28. The match, which is scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m., is free to the public. It has not yet been decided which team freshman forward Iris Mora, who is also a member of the Mexican squad, will play for.
Head coach Jillian Ellis
Head coach Jillian Ellis is currently in her fourth season at the helm of the UCLA women's soccer program. In just three seasons, Ellis has transformed UCLA into one of the elite women's soccer programs in the nation. She has guided the Bruins to the NCAA Tournament in each of her first three seasons, including a trip to the quarterfinals in 2001. She owns an overall record of 56-13-2 at UCLA and her overall coaching record is 75-32-2. In just her second season at UCLA, Ellis guided the Bruins to the 2000 NCAA College Cup, falling to North Carolina, 2-1 in the NCAA title match. For UCLA, which finished second in the national rankings in 2000 with a 19-4-1 overall record, it was the first College Cup appearance in the eight-year history of the program. Ellis was rewarded for her efforts when she was named NSCAA/adidas National Coach of the Year at the end of the season.
