Either last year or the prior year my daughter played the theme to Back to the Future in their band concert.

They had no idea about the movie that it went with.

I also found myself glancing at the high school dance team while the band has been practicing the last few weeks.

No one on the dance team is even half my age.

For that matter, almost all of the UAB golden girls are under half my age.

Wait until you walk into your new doctor's office and find that he/she is less than half your age. I find myself noticing that most of the obit notices now are for folks younger than myself. That happens too. My oldest granddaughter is a cheerleader for her Hanover (IN) College team.

Here's how old I feel.

I saw your thread title "Class of '15" and thought it referred to 1915. 03-lmfao

I heard that's the reason Universal Studios did away with the Back to the Future ride about 5 years ago. They said that kids couldn't relate to the movie because at that time, it was 20 years old. I was VERY young when the first of the trilogy came out (2), but I can still remember cereal boxes advertising the movie...probably after it came out on VHS.

Oddly enough, the Back to the Future ride was replaced with The Simpsons ride, which came out two years after the first Back to the Future movie ('85 vs. '87). Hard to believe The Simpsons show is that old and still going.

Try being a middle aged teacher who is trying to make academic subjects relevent to these kids. A 2011 high school freshman was born in the middle of Clinton's Presidency and only knows "W" and Obama from actual experience. America has been at war in Iraq and Afghanistan their whole experiential lives. Giving them only a $20 bill for their birthday is essentially neglecting them. Any modern high school's parking lot is designed to provide a space for a car for each student old enough to drive.

The school Library (if it is up to date) no longer uses a "Card Catalog" to look up books and articles. They can look up any subject you assign in seconds on the internet and print out a report on any topic in seconds without reading anything if they can get away with it. Most of them now have the latest computers at home while those at most public schools are regarded as antiques (most are over 10 years old).

There's an error on the list. These kids have known a Supreme Court with just one woman.

Joke's on you, most of those kids probably couldn't even tell you the make up of the current Supreme Court.

Most ADULTS couldn't tell you the present Supreme Court lineup. It seems to change more today than what I remember from my youth when a change was so seldom that it was really big news.

Kids tend to be more realistic about priorities than adults. They follow entertainment news closely since those are the people our society rewards most lavishly. They don't learn the importance of "lip-service" to intellectual pursuits until they are adults. It sort of parallels their exposure to Santa Claus. They believe, then they become skeptical and then they grasp the importance of appearing to believe for the sake of other children and the payoff each Christmas from that belief.
