Hey panama, what is the status of further stadium renovations such as removing old bleachers, opening the upper deck, etc. Or was last year's renovations it for now.

This offseason is mostly unseen under the bleachers updates for football operations and the new weight room so we can move out of the football complex.

Eventually part of the upper deck will be removed and then rebuild over the new east side stands. The space that was RF for baseball behind the new stands will have an IPF built there. But this is multi year.

Part of the upper deck will be open tomorrow night for the Foo Fighters and the Struts concert.

Also the AAF has located a franchise there starting in 2019.

RE: All Things GSU
I have cousins in Atlanta. They are GA Tech grads, but am trying to ask them if I could come down for the GA St/WMU game if Tech doesn't have a home game that same time. (my guess would be they don't) Would like to check out the new GA St stadium! :)

(Out of curiosity, what is the tailgating like for a G5 team like GA St in a big city like Atlanta? I understand the hub of the GA St campus is in downtown Atlanta, but how far is the stadium, too?)

The northern edge of the stadium property is about 3/4 of a mile from central campus. The tailgating is at the stadium and while not SEC or NFL level they do party hard. There is usually a huge contingent of students that don't even go in the game (like at most schools) and there is a large core group of alumni who tailgate right. You will be offered a burger and a beer or a shot by someone or several someones. The first phase of the Carter project will be restaurants and bars and coffee shops on Georgia Avenue accross the street and adjacent to the stadium so that atmosphere will continue to build especially once the campus buildings, apartments and condos come to the former Turner Field parking lots.

Intersting. I thought since it was possible the stadium may sit further from campus in an urban environment where tailgating lots may be scarce , the school might not have as big a tailgating scene.

In regards to how far actually the stadium is from campus, that's practically right next to it. Sounds like a big reason GA State was interested in the stadium was it was so close to their campus.

The stadium and parking lots are 70 acres

Yes proximity and 70 acres downtown plus a professional sports stadium with 250k sq ft of office space and 50k chair backs were all reasons.

Georgia State moving forward with 'state-of-the-art', 200,000-square-foot event center

Georgia State University is moving forward with plans to build a state-of-the-art, 200,000-square-foot event center in downtown Atlanta.

The Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia is seeking to hire a firm to provide program management services for the project, which has an estimated total budget of $79.2 million, including an estimated construction cost of $61 million. The Board of Regents hopes to select finalists by early June and interview them in early July.

The new facility will be located on the corner of Fulton Street and Capitol Avenue.

"The GSU Convocation Center will bring increased focus on academic and ancillary programs through hosting national and international events on campus in Downtown Atlanta," the Board of Regents says. "Economic impact of a state of the art venue for national and international events has immense potential. The Center will provide a national and international stage upon which GSU can share the social, academic and research programs and offerings of the institution."

The Board of Regents goes on to say that, "Exterior design will encompass a skillful blend of brick masonry, stone, metal and glass to create a facility that is visually appealing and efficient to operate. This facility will provide appropriate indoor space to meet its current and future assembly/event needs. In addition to a large multi-purpose arena with a seating capacity of 8,000, the facility will celebrate its flexibility by hosting athletic events, convocations, commencements, conferences, concerts and other major events on a scale reflective of the University’s national and international stature in learning and research. The building will feature divisible meeting and conference spaces with state of the art technology, lighting, acoustics and building control systems." Read more about the project here.

Panama,
Where are the student housing currently located? I read the article of Georgia St getting redeveloped and that would be a big improvement. Is it safe to walk from campus to the stadium? The map probably doesn’t due justice to see how one could walk across the freeway using other roads.

By the way, glad to see action on the development. It will greatly improve the images of GSU facilities. The Sunbelt did good picking you guys up for football. I can see GSU moving up in another conference down the road.

There are dorms both state owned and private on and near the central campus. The northern edge of the stadium property is about 3/4 of a mile from central campus. It's pretty safe. Students have actually parked at the stadium and boarded shuttles to class for decades. The areas that are still kind of sketchy are south and west of the stadium although they are changing rapidly. The stadium itself is about 1.2 miles from central campus. The entire property is being developed into a South campus. Besides the retail and residential there will be dorms and apartments and condos and classrooms. As we speak a private dorm is going up accross the street from the stadium. Private because the Georgia Board of Regents is getting out of the dorm business. They prefer to have a private company build and manage where posible even if they own the land underneath.

Also by March the football operations build for Phase II should be done, moving everything football related to the stadium.

Exciting times for Georgia State and its fans -- but also for anybody who cares about the future of metro-Atlanta.

Hoping to be there for the Georgia Southern game on 11/24.

Everything makes sense save for Tennis at Piedmont Park. They could have added courts to any of the 3 Phoenix Parks in Summerhill or just gone to Grant Park IMO.

The Sharon Lester Tennis Center already exists and we have used it as our tennis home for many years. I am thinking we also do not want to encroach more in the neighborhoods since we are already talking about track and field and Cheney Stadium in Summerhill.
